Tailgating!

Ugh! I tend to drive around 5mph over the speed limit, since I feel that's a happy medium between getting a ticket and having the guy behind me up my @ss. After years of driving a mid-sized SUV, I switched last year to a small, zippy, gas-sipping convertable and it's scary as everything to look up in your rear-view mirror and see nothing but the grill and hood ornament of the jerk behind you. Nowadays, who knows whether the person behind you has a gun, insurance, or what they'd do if they hit you. Even if you're hit and they're insured, there's still the hassle of getting your car fixed while figuring out how to get to work. If someone is really badly tailgating, I tend to try to casually turn into a parking lot or some street that I can easily get back out onto the road without really being noticed too much. At night I've started just driving the SUV, even though it gets 1/2 the gas mileage, I just feel safer with 5-6' between me and the guy behind me, instead of my convertable's teeny-weeny trunk! People just need to calm down and have a little respect for ohters. If that person in front of you is going 10mph under the speed limit at night, they're probably drunk and you need to give them plenty of extra space so you're not involved in whatever wreck they cause. The person going the speed limit is probably trying to find something, and the way signage is around here, good luck! :) I'd rather be 5 mins late and at my destination in one piece than not get there at all.

Road Debris

Truck tire debris in the highway is a major concern on Interstate 95 at night. Sometimes trucks will run over the rubber tire pieces and fling them back. Knowing where these will land is a guess as you slow your speed and brace the steering wheel. Seeing a huge tire rim in the middle of both lanes requires another swerve. And, then there is that large sliver that is lurking along the dark shoulder waiting for you to hit it. Calling the highway patrol is the best bet to getting these pieces removed immediately. But, is there some way to get all this litter off the highway and keep it off?

Foreign Drivers

Too many people learned to drive outside the United States and brought their driving customs to the United States. They should have to attend driving school before getting a driver's license.

Truck tire debris on highway.

These trucks should not be allowed to re-tread their tires. They should have to purchase new tires. I believe this would eliminate over half of the tire debris on the roads. I recently had a lot of damage to my car when someone hit a truck tire that was on the highway and it flew into my car. (I thank GOD everyone was ok) but it cost me the $500 deductible. That's not right.
I could find a much better use for that $500.00

I had the same thing happen

I had the same thing happen to me today on my way to work. A van hit retreat in the hwy and it hit my car and now i have thousands of dollars worth of damage to my hood and my bumper, and my car is only 1 month old. I am pissed and i think the state should cover this since the truckers are suppose to clean up their tires when this happens, or the state road crews. I now have to dig up 500.00 to pay the co-pay.

Road Debris (car parts, blown out tires, trash, etc.)

My vehicle was also struck by a piece of flying debris on the interstate. I was traveling behind the cab of an 18-wheeler (not pulling a trailer) when it struck a blown out tire and sent it flying into my car. I swerved to try and avoid hitting it but it ultimately clipped the front right side of my vehicle. It jolted the vehicle and I heard a loud thud. I immediately pulled over at the next exit to find out that it completely broke through my bumper. Who knows what damaged it caused to the vehicles traveling behind me. The blown out tire was huge and had to have been from a large commercial vehicle. I think that commercial drivers need to be held to stricter requirements and laws governing vehicle safety inspections and standards. There also needs to be more road cleanup crews patrolling the highways and policing up the shoulders. This source of labor can come from inmates in correctional institutions who are in good behavior programs. It should be an inherent responsibility for states to provide safe road and driving conditions for all drivers traveling on it road systems.
