We just got back from a week in Massachusetts. The trash along 95 got better in some states and was worse or about the same as here. So, it isn't just a problem here.

Connecticutt had the cleanest highways. But maybe that is because they had No littering signs posted every 1000 feet it seemed. And the fines were listed as $200 - $1000.00. I don't see any signs anywhere around here.

I noticed that the Inmates were back out picking up litter, but it doesn't do any good. Driving down Fox Road today there were McDonalds (and possibly Burger King etc) wrappers, cups, french fry containers etc. There are empty soda bottles. The mattresses on 540 near Capital Blvd. are still there. There is a pile of carpet or carpet pads on 401 near Ligon Mill.

After writing to the Governor's Office, Mayor Meeker and Rodger Koopman, I got a response from Steve Abbott from the NCDOT. The trash has been picked up a few days after my email. Mayor Meeker said that it wasn't the City of Raleigh's responsibility. Technically it wasn't, but the trash actually came from the trailer park that was condemned by the City. And why is there a sign posted by the city there?

Anyways, here is info from Steve Abbott about what is happening and a number to call.

"In Wake County there is also a new litter ordinance in effect, which calls for sheriff's deputies to step up enforcement of litter laws. Violators are subject to fines of $250 up to $2,000, and community service time. Deputies are also taking a closer look at trucks with unsecured or uncovered loads, a primary cause of much of the trash along main highways. As part of the initiative, Wake County has set up a litter hotline to report violators at (919) 856-7000. And if you spot any roadway hazards or heavily littered sites in Wake County, please call in a report to the NCDOT county maintenance office at (919) 733-4768.

I took this picture of trash on 2/5 near Triangle Town Center. It is at the corner of Fox Road and Sumner (? I think that is the name). Looks like Burger King bags and the like...
