Social Inclusion and the New Rites of Passage: Addressing Isolation, Teasing, and Bullying
| |
Oct 10 2008 - 7:00pm
Oct 10 2008 - 9:00pm

Lecture by Kim John Payne, M.Ed. Friday, October 10, 7 pm. Brown Room, High School Building, Emerson Waldorf School, 6211 New Jericho Rd, Chapel Hill. Suggested donation is $10 for the general public. Pre-register at events@emersonwaldorf.org . For more information, see www.emersonwaldorf.org .

Through his research and practical experience, Payne has concluded that modern society has replaced coming-of-age rituals with intense social encounters. While experiencing some degree of social conflict and difference of opinion is vital to a child’s development, teasing that goes too far can create childhood trauma and interfere with learning. Payne provides tools to break free of the bully-victim paradigm and work towards resolution.

Open House at The Mariposa School for Children with Autism

Apr 3 2008 - 7:30pm

TThe Mariposa School will be hosting an Open House, on Thursday, April 3rd from 4:30 to 7:30. The school is location off Highway 64 near MacGregor Village at 203 Gregson Drive, Cary. Additional information is available at 919-461-0600.

April is Autism Awareness Month. As a part of the awareness of autism, The Mariposa School would like the community to be aware of the opportunities that it has offered to children with Autism over the last 7 years. The non-profit school, located in Cary, is recognized internationally as a leader in educating children with autism. The children range in age from 18 months to 14 years old. All of the instruction is intensive one-on-one instruction and based on the methods of verbal behavior under the umbrella of Applied Behavior Analysis - to date, the only method that is backed by scientific evidence. Although the intensive instruction is expensive, the long-term results and improvements in quality of life not only for the child with autism but also for the family are worth the expense. According to the Surgeon Gereral, "thirty years of research demonstrated the efficacy of applied behavioral methods in reducing inappropriate behavior and in increasing communication, learning, and appropriate social behavior" (Surgeon General's Report on ABA and Autism,1999).
