Raleigh stylist Natasha Bieber gives Amanda Lockyer a Mother's Day gift of a new hairstyle. Lockyer, from Welcome, North Carolina, is staying at the Ronald McDonald House of Durham while her 9-week old daughter Gracie Jean awaits a heart transplant. Bieber and three other stylists from Mitchell's Salons gave their time and talents to give 14 Ronald McDonald House Mom's a much needed lift.

Mother's Day Treat

Raleigh stylist Brenda Van Benschoten treats Rita Moxley to some Mother's Day TLC at the Ronald McDonald House of Durham. Moxley traveled two hours from Sparta, North Carolina to visit her daughter, Candace Barker, who is currently staying at the House. Barker's son, Isaiah Barker, has Severe Combined Immune Deficiency Syndrome (SCIDS) and has undergone two bone marrow transplants. "With all she's going through, I had to be with my daughter on Mother's Day and that's the main thing," said Moxley. "But having Brenda here on her day off, doing our hair and she's never even met us, now that's really the spirit of Mother's Day."

This orchid, a cattleya I believe, is one of our favorites. It's pleasing to the eye and the nose -- it actually has a nice fragrance. I shot the photo with a 105mm micro lens and an off-camera flash bounced off the ceiling.

We have lived in our current house for 6 years and have lost all but this one (of 5 )rodedendron plants to disease , over zealous teenagers who mowed into a couple of them and drought!! This last one has never flowered until this year so I was thrilled and delighted not only to see it in flower (finally) but also to discover it was a white flowering rodedendron!! I think it is beautiful-don't you?

Scarlet Plant Bugs

I saw many of the Scarlet Plant Bugs - Lopedia, mating on my Showy Evening Primrose. I saw nymphs on the Primrose stamens feeding on pollen. I do not think the bugs are destructive to plants. They are about 1 cm in length.

My Ice Plant, Marty got me. I had no idea what it was when he brought it home, as it had no flowers on it, and it just looked like a worm plant. It was one of those weird moments when someone gives you something and you wonder why they chose that gift. However, I now think its a pretty cool plant, even if it does bloom pink flowers!

This is the last shot, of the mama bird. She was more than tolerant of our presence around her nest which is only about three feet off the ground. She and the male, were both gathering closely to keep an eye out for us, and their young.

1853 Restaurant at the NC State Fairgrounds, Raleigh, NC.

1853 is when the State Agricultural Society holds the first State Fair; it was four days long. The largest attendance day had 4,000 fairgoers. It's a year-round treat nowadays.

When I planted this at my mail box, it looked like a no-hope dead stick!! Now I have a vigorous vine, with these beautiful red blooms, which I have to prune regularly in order to prevent it "swallowing" my mail box!!
