1976: The delegate dance has been a staple of the presidential prom season for decades. This year nearly 215 of 800 superdelegates to the Democratic convention remain undecided, and about 50 others will be named later. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have been a-courtin' them.

I would like to thank-0510

I would like to thank ...

Stimulating, rewarding, exhausting — words that most bedside nurses would use to describe their work. Yet despite multiple demands already placed upon them, 37 cream of the crop staff nurses from WakeMed Raleigh, WakeMed Cary, Rex Healthcare and Duke were chosen and agreed to individually coach and mentor 66 Wake Tech senior nursing students one-on-one.

Each graduating senior scheduled at least 120 hours to work whatever the schedule of the staff nurse preceptor. Side by side, they worked 8- to 12-hour day shifts, nights, weekends; grueling hours that they had not been exposed to in more typical nursing education clinical rotations.

Instead of complaining, the students talked about the wonderful exposure they got to the real world of nursing. They spoke of the utmost professionalism displayed by their preceptors. They told of being awed by the ability of the preceptor to oversee a full patient assignment while patiently and sometimes painstakingly guiding them to become more independent in taking over patient care. They aspired to one day demonstrate the competence and confidence they observed.

Thank you, preceptors, for making our nursing education program an even better one. In nursing's most challenging role, that of beside care, you truly represented our very best.

Dale O'Neal, R.N.
Lead Instructor Nursing 235, Wake Technical Community College
Raleigh

---------------------------------------------------------

In September of 1966, I was a 29- year-old U.S. Army captain, in fatigues and boots, returning home from serving almost a year in the Dominican Republic. Many people probably dont remember U.S. combat forces were there to stabilize the country suffering the ravages of a revolution. Bad flying weather stranded me at the Raleigh airport, where I met a local businessman trying to fly out on a business trip. I was exhausted from the 1,500-mile flight on a C-130 from Santo Domingo to Fayetteville, N.C., and I was almost out of money.

When he heard I planned to spend the night in a waiting room chair, he took me to his home, and there I met the most gracious Southern lady and two beautiful little girls. They provided me with a clean bed, a morning shower and a hearty breakfast before the two of us returned to the airport for our morning flights out. I was a complete stranger, yet they opened up their home and their hearts in true Southern hospitality.

To this day, I deeply regret not remembering their names so I could thank them again, after all these years, for their kindness and trusting a stranded soldier far away from home.

If anyone in this family still lives in the Raleigh area, and remembers this encounter, I would be grateful if he would contact me so I can properly express my gratitude.

Who is the bigger train wreck?

So there was a debate in my office about who has been the biggest celebrity train wreck over the past year. I voted for Amy Winehouse and so did my co-worker Karen. But other people were trying to give the title to Britney Spears. So, that's how the debate started. Who is it for you: Winehouse, Brit, Paris Hilton or Lindsay Lohan?

Did the state fail Planten?

The mother of Drew Planten, the suspect in the 2002 killing of Stephanie Bennett, is seeking damages from the state prison and health systems because, she claims, they failed to prevent him from killing himself while awaiting trial.

Sarah Chandler filed the claim for damages in December and she is seeking at least $10,000. Planten hanged himself in his solitary cell June 2, 2006, while he was being held at Central Prison.

Did the state fail to prevent Planten from killing himself? Should his mother get damages?

This cartoon continues the sexist treatment of Hillary by the press. By drawing her with a huge bottom and tiny feet you have made an attractive woman into a grotesque figure.

White Americans turning away from Obama?

CNN reported that Hillary Clinton suggested Wednesday to USA TODAY that "White Americans" are increasingly turning away from Barack Obama’s candidacy. She's quoted as saying, "I have a much broader base to build a winning coalition on." Read the story here.

Man married to three wives — at the same time!

Two women married to the same man teamed up this week to turn him over to police, one of the wives said Wednesday.

Police charged Keron Lamont Wilkins with one felony count of bigamy, according to an arrest warrant filed at the Wake County Magistrate's Office.

Why do you think someone would marry more than one person at a time? Bigamy is a Class 1 felony, punishable by four to 10 months in prison. Is that punishment enough?

Gas is too much! Help stick it to OPEC!

OK, it doesn't look like the price of gas is coming down any time soon. The politicians keep yammering about it, but do nothing. The oil companies are making record profits. OPEC (Organization for Petroleum Exporting Countries) is laughing all the way to the bank. We can sit on our butts and stew over it, or we can do something. There are two or three things we could do right now, today, to cut our gasoline consumption. For example, we could start driving more reasonably, 55 or 60 mph, instead of 75 or 80. That could have a dramatic impact. We could make sure that our tires are properly inflated. We could use the cruise control more. But these are just the most obvious ideas. You probably have some tricks. What are they? How can you help us keep our hard-earned money from the pockets of OPEC and the oil companies?

We read so much in our local newspapers about what type of lifestyle an inmate has, their living habits, their activities, their health matters, etc. During an inmates stay in one of the many camps across this state, there are many different avenues one can take. First of all, the lifestyle of an inmate is as different as it is on the street. There are straight men, gay men, shy men, body builders, bookworms and those who are trying to make it out never return. Those are the ones that really want and need the most help. Those who are able to attend classes and programs to better themselves need all the help a family and community can give. If an inmate without a high school education takes the time to get one while inside prison they should be supported in getting at least two years of college or getting a working trade.

Should Marvin Williams have been ejected?

Atlanta Hawks forward and former UNC star Marvin Williams was ejected for a flagrant foul on Boston Celtics guard Rajon Rondo in the third quarter. Williams said he was just trying to make a hard foul on the play. He chased Rondo down the floor on a fast break and caught him with his left arm and knocked him to the floor. You be the judge:

Is horse racing inhumane?

PETA is seeking the suspension of Eight Belles' jockey after the filly had to be euthanized following her second-place finish in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday.

Gabriel Saez was riding Eight Belles when she broke both front ankles while galloping out a quarter of a mile past the wire. She was euthanized on the track.

Now, some people are asking an interesting question: Is horse racing inhumane? What do you think?

Cost Cutting in the Economy

When an inmate is held on any prison camp in the state it is hard for them to believe God is working in their lives. Take an inmate who was in the church, worked hard at a job as well as in the community. How would they feel about their community and faith in God? How would you keep the faith or even show someone that God really matters in their lives? For a person who has been mistreated by their community and by the legal system, should they look to the community for support or write everyone off as liars, back biters, or fake people of God. Sure it is written, who is without sin cast the first stone, love thy neighbor as thy self or do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Which one do you use in your life, because if a person does all these things daily, then why are we lying about what someone else may or may not have done to someone knowing that we are doing stuff ourselves.

How can education be improved?

A poll by The N&O and the Charlotte Observer identified education as one of the top concerns of voters this election season. Particularly under fire is Bush's No Child Left Behind Initiative, which places strong emphasis on end-of-grade testing. Candidates bring to the table a variety of proposals to improve education while maintaining emphasis on improved performance, job training and teacher accountability. What do you think would help improve our state and national education systems?

A judge acquitted three New York Police Department detectives of all charges Friday morning in the shooting death of an unarmed man. Sean Bell was killed in a 50-bullet barrage, hours before he was to be married. Bell's fiancée, Nicole Bell, ran from the courtroom after the judge read his decision.

What do you think of the Day of Silence?

Friday is the "Day of Silence" at many schools, when some students will take a vow of silence to bring attention to the bullying of gay and lesbian students. Meanwhile, some conservative groups are asking parents to keep their children out of school Friday to protest the Day of Silence. Also, those opposed to the Day of Silence will have a "Day of Truth" on Monday, at which they'll talk about why they disagree with homosexuality. Should students be given excused absences if they boycott school Friday because of the Day of Silence?
What should immigration policy be?

A poll by The N&O and the Charlotte Observer identified immigration as one of the top concerns of voters this election year. Candidates and experts bring a variety of views to the table regarding how to address immigration -- particularly amid a large-scale wave of illegal immigration that became especially contentious in 2007.

How should the government handle immigration? Who is responsible for enforcing immigration laws?

Is the Pacman Jones deal good for the Cowboys?

Everyone knows I'm a huge Cowboys fan and I love when we can get a player that can help us win. But I'm not to sure about the Pacman Jones deal. Was this a bad trade for Dallas?

Should the state Republican Party run a TV ad about Jeremiah Wright?

The state Republican Party says it will air an ad linking two Democratic candidates for governor to Barack Obama's controversial former minister, despite objections from Sen. John McCain.

The ad shows video of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and then slams Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue and state Treasurer Richard Moore.

Two questions here: Should they run the ad that is scheduled to start on Monday? Also, does the Jeremiah Wright situation have anything to do with Perdue or Moore? Watch the ad below.

Also, who should drop out?Click here to join the discussion.

What do you think of using partially-treated wastewater for irrigation purposes?

What do you think of the plan to pipe partially-treated wastewater to large users such as golf courses and N.C. State for irrigation?

Continuations of Comments Beyond Photo Captions

A catch-all place to continue lengthy or somewhat related discussions beyond the usual comments under captions for photos posted in the main gallery here -- just check the date posted and/or the topic name for easier reference to the photo in question and perhaps if possible post a thumbnail of the photo with the continuing questions, comments, and/or other discussions in reference to each photo. And its alright if this become a long linear thread over time. It could lead to some interesting reading as time goes on.

And with this being said and this new topic now created, we all now have a place to continue discussions where in the past it may have seemed somewhat awkward.

Déjà view-421: A look back at a Dwane Powell cartoon that has resonance today.

2001: When the economy was faltering back in March 2001, then-Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan said one of the biggest factors toward avoiding a slide into a recession was the state of consumer confidence. This month, consumer confidence hit a 26-year low.

You asked for it ...

You asked for comments about your guest comic strips; here are mine. I enjoy Cul De Sac and Arctic Circle is a keeper, but Retail leaves me cold. However, any one of them can replace F Minus and improve your selection of comics. It is a most-appropriately-named strip. I strongly agree with a previous commenter -- a blank space would be funnier than F Minus.
