Is Johnny Depp the sexiest?

Get lost, Hugh Jackman. This year's "Sexiest Man Alive" is once again Johnny Depp.

Depp nudged aside Jackman to get the coveted endorsement from People magazine Wednesday. It's the 46-year-old actor's second time as "Sexiest Man Alive." He also won in 2003. Read the story.

Would you agree that Johnny Depp should get this "honor?" I mean, what about Brad Pitt?

A camera in search of new subjects

Since we all have those times when our cameras seem to collect more dust than pictures I figured it might be appropriate to have a one-click stop - a place for sharing and discovering new ideas.

Harrison Barnes chooses UNC

Harrison Barnes of Ames, Iowa, a 6-foot-6 wing who is considered the top basketball recruit in this year's class, announced today that he would attend North Carolina.

Barnes announced his choice by calling head coach Roy Williams on Skype during a news conference. Read more at newsobserver.com.

What does this mean for Duke and Mike Krzyzewski? Has Krzyzewski lost his recruiting edge? UNC coach Roy Williams has clearly been the better recruiter the last few years. What do you think?

Apparel Industry grows in the Vietnam

The apparel and textile industry in Vietnam has overtaken crude oil as that country's No. 1 export.

During the first 10 months of this year, Vietnam shipped $7.5 billion in apparel and textiles to primarily the United States and Europe, according to the Vietnamese General Statistics Office.

Vietnam's apparel manufacturing sector has grown rapidly ever since the U.S. government early this year stopped monitoring Vietnamese apparel coming into the United States. The Bush administration feared that Vietnam would dump apparel goods on the U.S. market and started closely watching import prices in 2007 to determine whether anti-dumping duties should be imposed.

Goldstone on BIll Moyers

Goldstone addressed some "concerns" about his UN report on Gaza.

I thought this one was interesting. He compares the US approach and Israel's comparatively careless one despite having almost as advanced and trained forces:

http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/10232009/transcript1.html

BILL MOYERS: ...Israelis claim that if you hold them to this standard that you'd just described, that law prescribes for conflict, any democracy that's fighting terrorism is likely to find itself dragged into an international court of justice. I mean, do you consider that a valid concern?

RICHARD GOLDSTONE: No. Absolutely not. Take the United States fighting wars in Kosovo and Iraq and Afghanistan. They have certainly at a high level, gone to extremes to protect innocent civilians. Where they've made mistakes, and mistakes have been made, in Kosovo, in Iraq, in Afghanistan, apologies have followed. The United States, in general, has accepted and tried its best, with the assistance of military lawyers, has tried its best to avoid violating international humanitarian law. So, it seems to me this is a smokescreen. I've got no doubt that the laws of war are sufficient to cover the situation of fighting what is now termed asymmetric war. It's not easy; I concede that. But there's a line over which you just don't transgress, without clearly violating the law.

Turkish TV Drama Creates Drama for Israel

A Turkish TV drama is set in Gaza and depicts some IDF soldiers doing some of the horrible things Israel is accused of doing- shooting innocents, etc.

Israel calls it incitement and hints that the government should crack down.

Would that be a democratic thing to do??

Israel also says the series has no basis in reality; Turkey isn't claiming it is a documentary- so what is the problem?

From link:

Lieberman added: "Such a drama series, which doesn't even have the slightest link to reality and which presents Israeli soldiers as murderers of innocent children, isn't worthy of being broadcast even by enemy states and certainly not in a state which has full diplomatic relations with Israel."

Church of Scientology goes on trial in France

Church of Scientology goes on trial in France

In France and other countries, the Church of Scientology is considered a cult and is watched; here, it is a religion and is protected. Which country has it right?

monitor too bright because I'm taller than my wife

Over the past few years that I've been posting pictures, many have been too dark. They have looked fine while I was editing them, but once I see them online on other computers, they look dark. More than once I've deleted pictures from this site so that I could brighten them up and repost them.
Although I knew I had a problem, it was intermittent and I could not get a handle on it. I posted a question to this forum, and people suggested I check the setting on my monitor. If it was set bright, I would tend to edit my pictures darker. I re-set my monitor, but the problem kept coming back, every now and then, for no aparent reason.

Rush Limbaugh and the NFL

Conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh has been dropped from a group seeking to buy the St. Louis Rams.

Limbaugh was to be a limited partner in a bid led by St. Louis Blues chairman Dave Checketts, but Checketts said in a statement Wednesday that Limbaugh's participation had complicated the effort. The group will move forward without him.

Many believe that the cause of the uproar is because of some of Limbaugh's past comments about the NFL and it's players. Others believe it is his politics that people don't like. Either way, he's out of the bidding.

Is it fair what has happened to Limbaugh? Should he be able to pursue ownership of an NFL (or any professional) team?

The second thing on your mind (when planning a picture)

For the moment, I'd like to talk about taking planned photographs, not spontaneous ones. Spontaneous shots are great, but I don't think what I'm about to talk about would apply well to those shots.

I'd like to talk about pictures where you choose a subject haead of time and think through the composition of the shot. I'm probably not talking about the kind of shot where you are walking down the street, say "whoa cool!" and snap, as great as those shots often are. For planned shots, there's an important consideration I bet many have not considered, even though I'd say it's really the second thing you should think about for this kind of shot.

Will Wake County schools become segregated?

With a number of Wake County school board candidates not backing the "busing for diversity" idea any longer some worry that the schools (and the county) will become segregated — again.

This brings up a few questions:

1) Who's responsibility is it to make the schools diverse?

2) Do the schools need to be diverse for children to be successful?

3) What will a "resegregation" of schools mean for the area as a whole?

The Incredible Shrinking News and Observer

The News & Observer is shrinking at an incredible rate. Back in January 2008, the average daily weight of the N&O was about 15.5 ounces. In late September 2009, the average daily weight of the N&O was about 9.1 ounces. That's a 41% decrease. Before we know it, the N&O will be the size of a coctail napikin. The problem is, the subscription or daily cost of the News & Observer has not decreased to keep pace with the shrinking content for which we are paying. Let's all call the News & Observer and ask for a refund and a proportionally

The Climate Bill & Nuclear & Atmospheric Warming

The Climate Change Bill reads: "... nuclear power plants virtually eliminate emissions of greenhouse gases ..."

Yet: "... even after controlling the greenhouse effect, the earth would warm up due to heat wasted from energy use. ... solution lies in using renewable sources that don’t add extra heat to the planet."

(http://southasia.oneworld.net/todaysheadlines/energy-waste-causing-another-global-warming/?searchterm=energy waste causing another global warming)

Meanwhile: "... according to a 2006 analysis by the U.S. Department of Energy ... offshore wind resources on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts exceed the current electricity generation of the entire U.S. power industry."

Zionism is racism?

Recent events have resparked the debate (and/or attempted suppression thereof) of Zionsim as racism. Is it or isn't it? Or is this too simple a question?

Ayalon about the Goldstone report condemning Israel and Hamas for war crimes:

http://jta.org/news/article/2009/09/16/1007920/ayalon-treat-goldstone-report-like-zionism-is-racism-resolution

and Netanyahu in the Sept 24, 2009 UN General Assembly Speech (a quote):

"...the United Nations would revert to its darkest days, when the worst violators of human rights sat in judgment against the law-abiding democracies, when Zionism was equated with racism and when an automatic majority could declare that the earth is flat."

Obama could trim summer break for students

Obama says American kids spend too little time in school, putting them at a disadvantage with other students around the globe.

"Now, I know longer school days and school years are not wildly popular ideas," the president said earlier this year. "Not with Malia and Sasha, not in my family, and probably not in yours. But the challenges of a new century demand more time in the classroom." Read the entire story.

Should presidents go to media bigwigs instead of we the people?

Given the way media outlets are being bought- a few people owning many of the biggest names-- Are we barking up the wrong tree discussing big issues (does it matter)- is the president selling his messages to the wrong people (people vs bigwigs like Rupert Murdoch)?

Mark Rogers, CEO, Market Sentinel- his advice to Obama-

"if you can persuade rupert murdoch that your reform is beneficial to Rupert Murdoch then you might get it through"*

*may not be an exact quote; I transcribed it myself.

Do you feel the impact of war?

I hear people and journalists say from time to time that they don't really feel the impact of war in general life or society- apart from headlines, being a war correspondent or having family in the military. People don't really talk about it unless it is a policy discussion, usually left to "experts" on news programs.

Is it lack of images, numbers based reporting, lack of draft, apathy, the way Iraq and Afghanistan were bungled at the beginning?

During WWII and Vietnam, it is said that everyone felt the impact. This may be because of the draft, maybe not.

What are your top three places do eat in the area? Here are mine:

1. Top of the Hill in Chapel Hill

2. Michael Dean's in Raleigh

3. The Mint in Raleigh

Zazi arrest: Active Terror Cell Prepared NYC Attack

What do you make of this?

We have news of what they make seem to be a definite thwarted attack...

http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/active-terror-cell-prepared-nyc-attack-officials/story?id=8628780

and on the other hand we have...

Ibrahim Hooper of CAIR:

“It heightens our concerns about the case because you would expect that if the government’s allegations were based on strong evidence, that there would be charges brought based on terror-related evidence, not making false statements.”

UN condemns war crimes in Gaza

Any thoughts on the report?

The US and Israel say it's one-sided due to the fact that more pages and allegations are devoted to Israel's crimes.

The author of the report, Goldstone, as well as others contend that the accusations against Hamas are straightforward an uncontested (generally); but Israel's are more varied, more contested, and there were official justifications for law breaking that had to be checked.

Who's right?

Two analyses- first one features Goldstone himself, second one features Finkelstein:

Islam on Capitol Hill

Anyone have any thoughts on this event- good, bad, indifferent?

This is the email I personally received:

Subject: Islam on Capitol Hill

Tue, 15 Sep 2009 10:48:24 -0700

*Here is an event that all Christians should know about, and pray against. Go to the website for all the details, and*

*pass this along as a matter for urgent prayer.*

*Washington, D.C. - On September 25th* there will be a national prayer gathering of Muslims on the west front of the U.S. Capitol Building. They are expecting at least 50,000 to attend from mosques all across America. They will gather to pray from 4:00 AM until 7:00 PM. The gathering will take place by the site where U.S. Presidents have been inaugurated since 1981. The organizers say that it was Obama's inauguration speech in January and his speech broadcast from Egypt in June that gave them the idea for this prayer gathering on Capitol Hill. "

They have a website set up for this event. If you never look at another website look at this one, especially the final words: islamoncapitolhill.com <http://islamoncapitolhill.com/>

Was Joe Wilson's outburst based on racism?

Is Kanye West's career over?

After humiliating Taylor Swift at the MTV Awards Sunday night and going on Jay Leno Monday night and apologizing, what happens to Kanye West now?

Surely he can move on now, right? Maybe not. Some have called for a boycott of Kanye, most notably, Donald Trump and Joe Jackson. So what happens now for Mr. West? Is his career over?

Why are we paying for Israel's sins?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/aug/25/barack-obama-middle-east-peace

Apparently, we are going to adopt a tougher stance on Iran so that Israel can stomach following a part of the law to some degree. When are they going to be made to take reponsibility and pay for their own sins? They should be the target of boycotts, divestment and sanctions, not a sweet deal in which they get to stay on occupied land in violation of the Geneva Convention, get us to fight their battle with Iran (deja vu anyone?), and have Arab nations normalize relations!!

Should older drivers take a test every year?

The death of a Raleigh child who police say was struck by an 83-year-old driver could mean a renewed push for stricter regulation of older drivers, said a legislator who helped kill such an effort this spring. Read The N&O story here.

Should older drivers be subject to taking a driving test every year to ensure safety for others on the road?

Troy Davis case: Scalia- Innocents can/should be allowed to be executed ???

"The Court has never held that the Constitution forbids the execution of a convicted defendant who has had a full and fair trial but is later able to convince a habeas court that he is ‘actually’ innocent."

What do you think of Scalia's statement above concerning the Troy Davis case?

Is this what the Constitution says? Is it morally right?

Recession's impact on culture

Is anyone else seeing a change in people's attitudes as a result of the recession? I'm seeing less pretentiousness, more humility. (See article here.)

At least the recession has some benefits!

Blackwater / Xe- a NC company- hit man and Crusade allegations

This is a NC company. Does this bother anyone? Anyone want to come to their defense?

What about the entire mercenary army situation in general? Does it help fill the ranks? Is is a way to get around pesky military codes of justice? Are there benefits to this system and did it help us with our goals in the Middle East?

Aug 4, 2009 ... Sworn statements filed in Federal Court allege that Blackwater founder Erik Prince launched a crusade to eliminate Muslims and Islam.

Obama & Co = Trafficking in Illicit Drugs

Asked if his New York Crime Family was dealing in narcotics, John Gotti replied: "No, who can compete with the government?"

Here Read:

+ DynCorp: Beyond the Rule of Law / Colombia Journal:

--"Despite the fact that a company contracted by the U.S. government to carry out its program of fumigating and eradicating coca crops in Colombia has been caught smuggling heroin out of the country, no attempts have been made to bring it to justice."

"These discoveries might only be the tip of the iceberg as DynCorp’s activities are conducted in absolute secrecy and appear to be beyond the jurisdiction of any governmental body. A high ranking police official in Colombia, who has known about DynCorp since their 1993 arrival in Colombia, told Semana magazine, 'no authority, whether the Civil Aviation Authority, police or army, is authorized to search DynCorp’s planes. Nobody knows what they carry on their return to the United States because they are untouchable.'”

acting out a commercial (Israel-Cellcom)

The commercial itself sparked quite a controversy- was it innocent, making light of a horrible situtation, what is the significance of not showing Arabs, etc...

THE commercial:
http://blogs.abcnews.com/theworldnewser/2009/07/israeli-cell-phone-company-in-hot-water-over-ad-featuring-wall.html

And the acting it out...

Maybe it was a good idea, bad idea moment? Or a statement?

The village of Bil’in and the commercial
http://www.bilin-village.org/english/articles/press-and-independent-media/Palestinians-mock-bad-taste-ad

Palestinians mock 'bad taste' ad
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/8161004.stm

School of the Americas and Honduras Coup

The School of the Americas graduates dictators and soldiers who would later perpetrate massacres in Central America. Most recently, it was said that the coup leader, Micheletti, who took over in Honduras, is also a graduate of this “school”.

 http://www.democracynow.org/2009/7/1/generals_who_led_honduras_military_coup

What is the purpose in this?

Nothing would justify such behavior we taught dictators and others, but we generally have motives, regardless if they make sense or not. In the Middle East, we act unjustly because of oil, Holocaust guilt, Western government and whatever else. What’s the deal here?

Roxana Sebari vs foreign journalists we hold?

We made a big deal about getting Roxana Saberi freed; should we do the same to journalists we have imprisoned?
Are we in the US- Americans- acting like Iran in sending journalists to Guantanamo?

http://articles.latimes.com/2009/may/24/world/fg-iraq-journalist24
two page article

How many more are there?
Why don't we hear anything close to the Saberi hype?

Obama and Israel "finding common ground" on settlements?

U.S., Israel inch closer to deal on settlement freeze
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1103115.html

“The two are reportedly close to a deal in which Washington would allow a limited number of projects in advanced stages of construction to be completed, but Israel would freeze all other building for an as-yet undetermined period of time.”

If settlements are illegal, why are we bending on this issue at all?

Should there not be dismantling of all instead of a freeze on most to comply with law?

Settlement natural growth vs. Palestinian natural growth

Israel is trying to justify settlement growth and expansion with a "natural growth" argument. Everyone has the right to have a baby, etc. If you're living on Occupied Territory, do you really have these rights?

Moreover, given that Israel denies building permits to Palestinian Israelis and demolishes their homes if they build onto their homes despite the fact that they couldn't get a permit due to their ethnicity, how valid is the Israeli settlement natural growth argument?

The Israel – Palestine Problem: The perspective of a New Zealand Muslim
http://www.aen.org.nz/journal/1/1/rahman.html

Palestinian vs. settler- who belongs in jail?

The Palestinian who builds a canal on his own land gets arrested. Where do illegal settlers in settlements, outposts and demolished outposts go?

http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2009/06/israeli_settlements_in_the_wes.html

Is the Palestinian guilty of a crime?

Why aren't settlers in jail? Are not all of them (or Israel) violating the 4th Geneva Convention? Or isn one at fault in the settlement issue?
