I Became a "Teaching Model"

My name is Sasha. I was killed in the month of April 2008, at Wake Animal Center. I was healthy dog who accidently became a stray dog. I sat in my cage for three weeks. One day, visitors came to see me. They took me to the animal shelter courtyard to play. I felt very happy that day. I started whirring around the courtyard showing them what a great dog I would be...if they only gave me the chance. Well, they decided to look at other dogs. I was taken back to my cage.

Three thousand dogs and cats are born every hour in the United States. The number one cause of our death is euthanasia. Spay and Neuter your dog. We don't want to be born to die.

This gorgeous male German Shepherd mix came in as a Stray on 4/30. He does have a microchip and messages have been left for the owners, however no one has reclaimed yet. He has an injury on his front leg that the vet says is an old injury. He appears very happy & healthy other than this. This guy is already neutered and could go home as of 5/11 if the owners do not reclaim. Please come see him and give him a second chance!

Read August 1st Inspection of Wake Animal Center

Read here the NC Dept. of Agriculture August 07 inspection of the Wake Animal Center two Dog Rooms. The temperature was 95 degrees.

The temperature was above what is considered humane for the dogs.

http://www.ncagr.com/vet/aws/Inspections/Wake_County/index.htm

WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO ABOUT THE TEMPERATURE THIS SUMMER AT WAKE ANIMAL CENTER?

EXTREME HEAT, STUCK IN A CAGE 24/7, A 5 MINUTE BREAK IN THE SUN RIDDEN COURTYARD, 70% OF THE DOGS WILL THEN BE WALKED TO THE DEATH ROOM FOR CALCULATED KILLING. THEY WILL BE PLACED IN A BLUE PLASTIC BAG IN THE DUMPSTER.

A COURTYARD THAT OFFENDS: WAKE ANIMAL CENTER

WHY WON'T WAKE OFFICIALS CONSIDER COVERING THE TINY COURTYARD AT WAKE ANIMAL CENTER WITH SOME PROTECTION FROM THE SUN? SHELTER DOGS AND POTENTIAL ADOPTERS NEED TIME TO GET TO KNOW ONE ANOTHER?

SUMMERTIME...AND THE LIVIN' AT WAKE ANIMAL CENTER IS NOT BREEZY

The Shelter Dogs of Wake County Animal Center will not be enjoying their summer stay at the animal shelter. Last year, the Wake Animal Center failed inspection for ambient heat temperature above 85 degrees. Wonder what the NC Dept of Agriculture will say this year? After much hollering by a few volunteers, Dept. of Environmental Services had the county fork over a few bucks for some fans for the two dog rooms. The fans were inadequate.

One wonders what reprieve Wake County officials gave the dogs and cats before volunteers screamed in 2007? Election time is in November. You are in charge of your money and how it is spent. What do you plan to do about the overpopulation of dogs and cats in your county? What will you do about the heat this summer in the dog rooms of Wake Animal Center. (The cats have air condition.)

I went to the polls at 6:30 and there was virtually no line. I was in and out in no time. There is something special about exercising your right to vote. You feel like you've accomplished something. That's why I don't understand how people with the right to vote don't. We can be heard. Vote. Get your sticker.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS?

More Upper Respiratory Infections.

More Dogs and Cats Killed.

More Dogs and Cats Facing Emotional Abandonment.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Write Wake County Commissioners a letter demanding them to put Spay & Neuter as their number one PRIORITY for Wake County animals.

Tanner: Shelter Dog on YouTube.com Labeled Dog Aggressive by WCAC Staff

Here is a You Tube Video of Tanner, the former stray of Wake County Animal Center. Tanner was supposed to be executed because he was deemed "dog aggressive and had allergies." I found a home for him in the nick of time. Tanner now lives happily amongst a large family of dogs and children on a ten acre farm. His supposed dog allergies do not exist. The hair on his hind legs has grown back. I got to go hiking with Tanner and his new Mom two weeks ago. We had a wonderful picnic afterward.

Watch Tanner live...on YouTube!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsAxkror_24

SHELTER DOG BUDDY SPEAKS OUT

During the time I volunteered at a local Triangle animal shelter, I called myself a Shelter Dog Buddy. Going into dog cages, one by one, I realized the emotional pain shelter dogs are forced to endure.

I decided my mission would be to befriend as many dogs as I could; whether they would be adopted or killed. I had never done something like this before. I knew this would cause me heart stabbing pain. I realized I would have to keep giving up my pain in order to relieve the dogs of their emotional loneliness. I found this to be a heavy hearted process; letting go of the toxic buildup of anger and sadness I accumulated; while drinking up the emotional loneliness, stress, and sadness of each dog. I learned fast what made them smile. I learned how to relax their muscles, put sparkle in their eyes, and speak to them. They quickly learned about me, too.

Each time I left the animal shelter, I was filled with an overwhelming myriad of emotions; fierce anger, sadness, hope, hate, loyalty to my Shelter Dog Buddy role, impatience with what I considered flawed communication between staff and volunteers, a deep longing to save even one dog; images of their sad facial expressions, a blink of a dog’s eyelash, or paw sticking out in the aisle; underneath a cage door. Those paws made me cry. Walking past the numerous cages of abandoned dogs, I felt like a branding iron was searing my heart. Dogs were padlocked in their cages around the clock; weeks on end because they caught the never ending shelter cold. Pups three and four months old were locked in their cages without chew toys to relieve their gums from teething pain. Many of these pups were killed on my watch.

Not TV producer Brian Williams. He and Betzi Hekman have spent months putting together a TV production to be held Saturday night of a local fashion show to showcase homegrown design talent.

And already, all of the front row seats for Strut -- at $100 each -- are gone. In fact, Williams is expecting the entire show, all 750 seats, which range in price from $25 to $100, to sell out by midweek.

POISON-WSP-MIL PARADE

BRET MICHAELS
April 24, 2008
Hi-5 Street Party

We've been living through the Dark Period, all winter long inside
dark bars with little light and less room but now it's out the in
door to the vast open spaces which is a shock to the systems to
be shot through this transition but the Raleigh weather has made
the tequila-worm-hole leap an exciting adventure and all eyes are
now wide open with the transition to the new again world.

It's not a complete cycle yet with some concert tickets still left
to be burned through that are back within walls but the Earth has
turned on its axis and we being along for the ride take the first
thrilling banking turn on Friday at the BRET MICHAELS/POISON Event
on the blocked off street beside Hi-5/Bogart's.

Great & Powerful Elephant

Have you been to the circus? What is it like? Powerful, thrilling, mesmerizing? Frightening, overwhelming, a bit sad? Our own feelings about the circus play into our reading of Gruen's book.

If we're mesmerized, Gruen's take on the circus might call to mind the Wizard of Oz, when the Wizard says, right before the gig is up: "Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain."

Gruen flatly ignores the wizard, showing us that even though we might dream of running away to the circus, it's not all fun & games & cotton candy.

What is the effect of seeing behind the curtain in Gruen's book? Is it empowering? Illuminating? A lot like your own working life?

My Travels with Molly

Once before Molly and I had stopped by Yana’s Ye Olde Drugstore cafe on Front Street in the little arty town of Swansboro, which sits along the Intracoastal Waterway, just off one of North Carolina’s barrier islands. But on that first trip, we were too rushed to hang out for a while.

And Yana’s surely was a place to hang out for a while.

Worcester Memorial Auditorium

There was an article recently that showed how the Memorial Auditorium downtown looked over the years. The facade with the columns remind me of the Worcester Memorial Auditorium. I haven't looked it up, but I suspect that the same architect designed these auditoriums.

The Worcester Auditorium has had many lives. My HS graduation was held there. Concerts, plays etc. The High Holiday services for my reform temple were held here. In the back, they made a small theater that was used for Childrens' plays.

Paint That Bridge, Please

Route 146 connects Providence RI to Worcester MA. It is now a 4 lane highway that used to end just outside of Worcester. They connected the Mass Turnpike to that end of 146 and now 146 connects up with Route 290, which runs through Worcester.

They built several bridges over the new highway to connect roads that never used to go through, or for walkovers. But the nice thing they did was to paint them different colors:

This is a red one. They did blue, purple and green too.

Real Deli

There is a new "New York" or "Jewish" deli opening at the Falls River shopping area. We have been promised real deli several times and our hopes have been dashed. I hope this new place will come through. If they need a taste tester consultant, they can email me :0) and I can steer them in the right direction.

But, if you want real deli (Jewish and non-), you still have to go north. We stopped at Harold's Deli in Edison NJ on the way home from Massachusetts a few weeks ago. It is right off the Garden State and New Jersey Turnpikes (exit 10). The GPS took us right there! The last time we tried to get there we got lost LOL.

Hey, we can't blame Bob Dumas

So I've heard Bob Dumas say some things I thought would surely get him canned before. Some things that most people and I wouldn't dare say because we don't want to offend people. But that's what makes him good at his job; he says what you want to say but can't or won't. Let us not blame Bob. Let us look at ourselves.

When Bob is making his racist and sexist statements and we laugh or think he's right, we're the problem. We want him to say things for us so we don't feel as bad. That's how it is. We can laugh at guys like him because they take all the risk. They make the statements. It all falls on them and we get to laugh behind closed doors and 'amen' everything they say.

Why do we love to hate people who are different from us? Why are we amused when we talk about racial stereotypes? Our society is the problem, not guys like Dumas. He's just learned to make money off of it.

What's funny is the reason they even started talking about Native Americans. Someone who was working there as an intern or something was getting married to a Native American guy. She allowed them to make the jokes and didn't say a word. She wouldn't stick up for the person she was going to marry. If I were him, the wedding would be called off. How could she sit there and say nothing? Is she ashamed to be marrying him?

Anyway, back to Bob. Why suspend him? It just makes ratings even better for the show and more people will tune in to hear what he's got to say. G-105 knows that. G-105 also knows that we love to put each other down. That's where Bob comes in, he does it for us.

My Travles with Molly

While Molly and I were driving through Richmond heading for Moon, Virginia (I love the name), I was thinking about things that Molly would be experiencing for the first time.

          Little did I know.

Water for Elephants discussion

Mondays, in particular, find me yearning to do nothing more than lead elephants, horses, giraffes to water. We all have escape careers -- and who hasn't dreamed of running away to the circus? Sara Gruen does it, and brings us along with her. (The dream career of one of my grad-school professors was to sit on a dock by a river. And that's it. If somebody needed bait, she might point to a bucket, but she wouldn't scoop out the worms.)

A real dream career might be Sara Gruen's crafting of "Water for Elephants" -- spinning a story out of the facts of circus living.

How'd she do? I don't want to overdirect you, but you'll find some discussion questions here and here Pick one, or select a topic of your own.

Yes, the NBA should raise the age limit

David Stern wants to raise the age limit for kids to enter the NBA. Some are unhappy about it. If you don't like it, get over it. Click here to comment in the forum.

This is a great thing for the NBA, the NCAA and most importantly the kids. I don't want to hear that argument that the kids need to be able to "take care of their families" and that they are in bad situations. Allowing kids to go to the pros at an early age is a good thing for very few kids and those are the ones you hear about. LeBron James, Kevin Garnett, Kobe. What about the countless others who didn't make it in the NBA or NFL that now don't have a college degree or are in jail?

Like Maurice Clarett. The former Ohio State running back wanted to go to the NFL and challenged the rule and lost. He had to take a year off from football and wasn't in school. He ended up not making an NFL roster and then went to jail for a stupid crime. He should have been in school the whole time and maybe none of that would have happened.

I don't want to hear that stuff about an 18-year-old being able to fight in war but not go to the NBA. Raise the age limit for joining the military. Someone that young shouldn't be at war or in the NBA.

We need to make our kids aware that education is first, and then sports. What happens if a kid gets hurt? What do they have to fall back on? College is important. You can't be a doctor or lawyer without going to college. Most occupations require a college degree. The NBA is just saying give college a try for about two years. That's all.

Try this: Go to Duke or UNC hospitals and tell them you want to be a surgeon but you didn't go to medical school. Tell them you have all the skills you need because you learned in high school and you were a stand out student. Tell them if they don't allow you to work you'll take them to court. Try that and see if you get a job as a surgeon. You're right, they probably won't hire you. So why should the NBA?

The Imperfect Storm

Last night’s game was an aberration. If Carolina and Kansas played again, the Jayhawks might win, or the Tar Heels could prevail, but there’s almost no chance that we’d witness another ‘imperfect storm’ of Kansas playing ‘lights out’ on both ends of the floor while no one in Carolina blue seemed to be able to dribble, pass or shoot for most an entire half. Unfortunately, the “one and done” nature of the NCAA Tournament that gives Cinderella a chance to excite us in the early rounds applies in the Final Four too: One bad day and you go home. Carolina found that out the hard way Saturday night, playing easily its worst eight and a half minutes in the first half of its most important game, and leaving every Tar Heel fan aghast in shock and horror as the deficit expanded from 5 to 28 points in what felt like the blink of an eye.

Trash

We just got back from a week in Massachusetts. The trash along 95 got better in some states and was worse or about the same as here. So, it isn't just a problem here.

Connecticutt had the cleanest highways. But maybe that is because they had No littering signs posted every 1000 feet it seemed. And the fines were listed as $200 - $1000.00. I don't see any signs anywhere around here.

I noticed that the Inmates were back out picking up litter, but it doesn't do any good. Driving down Fox Road today there were McDonalds (and possibly Burger King etc) wrappers, cups, french fry containers etc. There are empty soda bottles. The mattresses on 540 near Capital Blvd. are still there. There is a pile of carpet or carpet pads on 401 near Ligon Mill.

Round 5: Kansas Jayhawks

By now, everyone knows that tonight’s Final Four in San Antonio will be the first time that all four #1 seeds have all survived and advanced to meet in the national semifinals. So if you thought the Tar Heels had a tough road through the East Regional (they did), as he saying goes, “You ain’t seen nothin’ yet!” Tonight’s game (estimated 8:47pm tipoff) against Kansas is almost certain to be a classic. If nothing else, it’s a chance to see at least six future NBA first round draft choices. Unfortunately, only half of that impressive accumulation of talent will be wearing Carolina blue, while the other half will be wearing a darker shade.

Wow, 40 years. There's more work to do...

Well, well. Today is should be a good day for all people. Martin Luther King Jr. died 40 years ago so everyone would eventually be treated equally. Sometimes I think (for some people, not me) he may have died in vain.

Before you start talking trash about me, just read a little more. Some people just don't understand the reasoning behind what King and others like him did. They didn't want anyone to be treated differently because of their race. Racial equality is all it was and still is about. The reason why I say he died in vain to some people is because some feel King brought on reverse racism and reverse discrimination. Those people blame King for affirmative action. Those people miss the point. If you feel that way, you miss the point.

Is it fair that I may not get a job because of my skin color? No.

Is it fair for me to be chosen over you because of my skin color? No.

These things aren't fair now and they weren't fair then. What's the "then" I'm referring to? I'm talking about when many black people couldn't get jobs because they were black. Yeah, that actually happened, believe it or not.

It seems to me that we only have a problem with this when "we" are affected. If other people have to deal with it we don't care. That's wrong and not what Dr. King stood for.

Here is the problem: some folks have a superiority complex.

If you have a superiority complex, get over it. You're not superior because of your race or height or weight or gender. None of those things make you better than anyone else. Once we get over that, we'll start to make progress.

Again, whatever your race or height or weight or gender is, you ARE NOT better than those different from you. PERIOD. Understand that. We are all equal.

MLK had a dream and died for it. We should ALL make sure he didn't die in vain.

Time to Reciprocate

Well just nine days since returning from Le Touquet, it is now our turn to play host. Ten students and their chaperone from Lycee Hotelier du Touquet arrived last night. All have been placed in hotels and businesses in the Cary area including The Umstead Hotel, Sheraton Imperial, and Embassy Suites. They are scheduled to visit our program at Wake Tech and participate in some of the culinary classes to see how we do things here. Some other activities include a formal recognition by the Town of Cary, taking in a Hurricanes game, and going to Mytrle Beach. They will be here until April 22, then w

#1 vs. #1 = Good Omen for UNC

According to SI.com, this year’s Final Four will end in only the 6th meeting of two #1 seeds for the National Championship since the NCAA began seeding teams in 1979. (The previous 5 matchups were: '82 UNC over Georgetown; '93 UNC over Michigan; '99 UConn over Duke; '05 UNC over Illinois; and '07 Florida over Ohio State.) Perhaps it’s a good omen that all 3 of UNC’s National Championships in the seeding era were won in confrontations of top seeds, and maybe it’s an equally promising sign that after 3 of the previous 5 times #1 played #1 for the title, “One Shining Moment” had a decidedly Carolina blue tint.

The "Sick" Dinner

Since we've been back, I have tried to remember each course, each bite of our dinner in Paris at Le Relais XIII. I don't know why such a memorable meal was not easily recalled down to the last detail. Maybe because a lot of the time I was just too busy enjoying the near perfection that these students (and I) were experiencing.

Why the "Sick" Dinner? This was a line that was used at some point during our planning sessions for this exchange. The students decided that with some of their fundraising money they would like to go to a classical French restaurant and have a really "sick" meal.

This is for all of us, regardless of our race...

I hate it when folks get upset or angry at people for doing certain things when they don't know why they did what they did. For some reason, we think we know everything and understand everyone else's motivations for doing things when in actuality, we have no clue.

Why and I ranting about this? Because Judge Marvin Arrington in the ATL (Atlanta) is under a little fire because he ordered white lawyers out of his courtroom when he wanted to address the defendants, who were mostly black. Now when you first read that you think the worst. I get it. But that's because the freakin' media knows that's we'll think that. On the surface it looks bad, but the judge is not racist. Do I know him? No. Have I ever met him? Nope. How do I know he's not a racist? Because I know several people just like him. People who want to help their communities understand what's right and what's wrong. You might think I'm crazy, but I'm not.

The judge said himself that he wanted to talk to the defendants one-on-one to chastise them for their wrongdoing and tell them that their lives are headed down the wrong path. He said he didn't want them to think he was talking down to them or trying to embarrass. So, once the reasoning is clear, how can that be deemed racist?

That's how this country is. If we don't understand it, then it's wrong or bad. I don't know if this is possible, but if he could have called them into his "chambers" and told them the same thing (and not doing it in front of anyone) we wouldn't even have an issue. We have to STOP calling everything racist. Some things are. But not everything. Especially this whole stupid idea of reverse racism. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but give me a break. Why cry when something is done to you and be silent when it's done to others? That's silly, Holmes.

Barack Obama's former preacher, Jeremiah Wright, wasn't being racist. He just told the truth. Period. Geraldine Ferraro wasn't being racist, either. She's just a confused human being.

I'm not saying that the actions and statements by Arrington, Wright or Ferraro were right, but they most certainly WERE NOT RACIST. We need to try and understand why people do what they do before we jump on them. Don't let he media stir you up.

Arrington was just trying to help his young people see their faults. At least someone is.

Stop calling everything racist, people. Stop with the reverse racisms accusations too. Get over it. Better yet, get over yourself.

They Named Me Bones and Killed Me Fast
