Norton affect

Has any one else heard of this affect/finish and/ or tried it? I discovered it on Flickr and the process although giving pleasing results seems laborious ( well, that's my perception of it!!)

I think I found it

It must be Orton you are thinking of. I have just seen the reference. I have no idea what it is.

Just a comment on the site

I wanted to let the webmasters know that I really am glad this site is here. For me, the sense of local connection is very nice. I feel like I'm getting to know people from around the area through their pictures. I like the fact that ratings are not totally anonymous, because how people rate things is another way to get to know them. I feel we have a civil, emotionally mature group of contributers, with a good amount of new blood, and I'm glad we have a place to meet.

Of course there are things on the site I wish worked differently, but I just wanted to say thanks for providing this space to share.

Thanks

Thanks Art.

The community you describe is what we strive for. I also see the continuous discussion that you and some of the other members have and I think it's great. Thanks for using our product. We know there are some things that should be different and we're working on them. Thanks for your patience.

the site

I wholeheartedly agree with you Art. It is a wholesome,family-friendly share site and I get an enormous amount of pleasure from seeing what every one is photographing, reading the constructive criticisms, the tips on what to photograph ,  and reading people's "how tos", to name but  a few.

Thank you mwilliams for providing this opportunity for us, and thank you fellow sharers for making it the success that it is.

And beyond

In addition to all the posts above that I wholeheartedly agree with, there have been occasions where photos posted here have led to real world encounters with new places and friends that I never would have known any other way. For an example, a photo posted a ways back of a pair of earrings with beads I had never seen before drew my curiousity and from there I just had to check out the place where these could be seen. After this point I had stepped into a whole new world and connections with people and other places beyond that. Since that one picture was posted my weekends have been completely different than what they would have been and in a good way too. Many thanks to the providers and contributors here!

Looking for Durham photos

I wanted to let photographers in this forum know that we plan to expand our use of a photo feature in one of our community newspapers, The Durham News. The feature, Your Best Shot, runs weekly in The Durham News. We're looking for photos by Durham-based photographers or photos of Durham people or places to run weekly with this feature.

If you would like for us to consider using one of your photos in this feature, please send a jpeg to editor@nando.com. Include your name, where you live, and a brief description about the photo.

If you have questions, you could contact me at van.denton@newsobserver.com or at 932-8749 or Mark Schultz, the editor of The Durham News, at mschultz@newsobserver.com or 932-2003.

I have been trying for several minutes to take a picture of a seed, suspended by a cobweb string. It looks like it is suspended against the sky. I was using Macro, and I tried all settings (Landscape, poiatrait, sorry about spelling, and action.) The camera indicated "unable to focus" "to far to focus". I move closer, further away, etc. Still not a clear picture. Any ideas how to accomplish this?

I see that your camera has a

The situation you describe is difficult for auto focus because the thing you want in focus is such a small part of the frame.

I see that your camera has a manual focus setting. If possible, you could try putting a large object right next to the seed, big enough for the auto focus to sense. Lock the focus by turning off the auto focus. remove the large object and shoot.

Or you could try focusing manually.

shooting small subject

Thanks Art, I will try that. But I will have to wait for the seed to come back. The seed is gone now....lol
