There are three art museums in the Triangle, one in each of the three largest cities and each with its own identity.

The biggest is the N.C. Museum of Art in Raleigh, whose permanent collection spans works from ancient Egypt through the present. It's in the midst of a major expansion that will add new gallery space, including the largest collection of Rodin sculpture in the Southeast.

The newest addition to the local museum scene can be found in Durham, where the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University focuses on contemporary works.

UNC-Chapel Hill's Ackland Art Museum has the best collection of Asian art in the state, along with a broad array of other art from ancient to modern.

But that's not all. There are other destinations for art lovers in the Triangle, including:

The Gregg Museum of Art & Design at N.C. State's Talley Student Center. The gallery's holdings include photography, textiles and prints.

The North Carolina Central University Art Museum in Durham includes Jacob Lawrence, Elizabeth Catlett and Romare Bearden among the artists represented in the collection of African-American paintings, drawings, sculptures and traditional African-American pieces.

The Duke University Center for Documentary Studies. Documentary photography and film are at the center of CDS activities, which include exhibitions, lectures and other events.

The Durham Arts Council. With three galleries, including the Durham Art Guild's CCB Gallery, this is a good place to get to know the work of Triangle artists.

Artspace, in Raleigh. See artists at work in their studies and check out the exhibitions, poetry slams and other activities.
