Speaking of macro photography...

jpbell11

Does anyone use a macro ring flash for macro photography?  I have been thinking about getting one and am not really sure what I should be looking for.  I have a Nikon D-70.  Anyone have any suggestions on either a good model, or certain aspects that I should make sure that a flash has before I buy one?  Thanks!  Julie

macro ring flash

jpbell,

N&O photo lab technician, Paul Magann, has this advice:

Ring flashes work fine on macro subjects, but it is known for
shadow-less light. This quality might be a good or bad thing depending
on what your subject matter is. Before purchasing this type flash you
should demo it at a camera store if at all possible.

I've shot a fair amount of macro photography and have never used a flash ring. I usually shoot in daylight when it's an outdoor subject or just set up one or two lights if it's indoors.

New Camera

I'd like to hear any comments. Also, there's a qustion at the end.

For my entry into dslr, I just bought a canon xsi and a 100mm macro lense. Part of my equipment decision was knowing people who bought a dslar but continued using the point and shoot because it did what they wanted and was easy.

I figure if dslr doesn't work out for me, at least the lens will have some resale value. (I'm assuming the camera body will drop in resale value more than the lens will.) On he other hand, if I end up going deeper into photography, I'll have a good piece of glass.

This package cost over 1200$ on Amazon, which for me ain't cheap. The original appeal of digital was the ability to forget about the cost of each shot (at least until printing). So this was a big decision for me.

I also bought a few filters, a remote, and a bag. Any advice on next purchases? I figure maybe a good telephoto.
