While North Carolina, N.C. State and Duke have won national championships in men's basketball, the success of Triangle football programs has been more modest.
Duke had powerhouse teams in the 1930s and 40s, and won Atlantic Coast Conference titles in the 1950s and early 60s, but the Blue Devils have won one game in the last two seasons.
North Carolina and N.C. State have new coaches this season -- Butch Davis at UNC and Tom O'Brien at NCSU. UNC and N.C. State have had winning seasons and been to several bowls in the last three decades, but the Tar Heels won their last ACC championship in 1980 and the Wolfpack in 1979.
Duke's last title was in 1989, when Steve Spurrier was the coach, but the Blue Devils have had just one winning season since '89. Duke and North Carolina traditionally play the last game of the regular season, but the Heels and Pack have had a more heated rivalry over the last 30 years. Tickets to the State-Carolina football game are scarce.
Wake Forest has built what is now the most successful program among North Carolina's ACC universities, winning the league championship in 2006.
