Overall Site Critique

After seeing the thread covering the issue with uploading photos and losing them when trying to preview, I thought I would post a couple of thoughts about this site in general, and the Photography thread in particular.

Overall, I find that the site is not very user friendly. It is difficult to navigate and find what one is looking for. The process of adding images to posts, for example, is not very well documented and is not at all intuitive. I spent a considerable amount of time online trying to find my personal information after I signed up on the site. The answer was relatively simple, just click on my user name, but it was not at all obvious.

These are just a couple of examples of things I see that are less than desirable. I am not a novice when it comes to the internet. I have been online since the early 1990's, starting with a 2600 baud modem and dialing into privately run bulletin board systems. I first explored the World Wide Web in 1994 while working on a Midwestern university campus. Since 1998, I have worked in IT. My point is that I have a lot of experience, and I struggle a lot with this site.

If the N&O is interested in making the site more user friendly, perhaps they could put together a focus group of frequent users to make suggestions for improvements.

We will do that

That's a great idea.  We put up this forum realizing that it would need improvements. .... We will arrange a meeting of users in the next week or so at the N&O, and invite all who want to participate. Maybe something in the early evening?

Thanks

Dan, thanks for the quick response to my suggestion. It's nice to see that you folks are paying attention!

Early evening would be fine for me, we'll have to see what others have to say. I'll be on vacation next week, but would like to participate if held later.

Good Idea

Amen to your comments, leesc_1998.  I, too, am an experienced internet user (online since 1993) and I have found Share very difficult to navigate.  Perhaps not quite as much lately, as I've gotten used to it, but especially so in the beginning.  And that, in my humble opinion, is the problem.  New users will not come back if the site is cumbersome and not user friendly.  After my first visit or two, I nearly quit out of frustration.

My thanks to Dan and the N&O for the offer to meet with users and listen to their ideas.

Unless, of course, the meeting is for photographers only.  Surely they wouldn't do that.

I'd love to have more than 1 meeting

I'd like to focus the first one on the photography, and then have another one on any general issues with the forum that folks would like to discuss, thum.  But you're welcome to come to the photo meeting.  A general usability meeting is a very good idea.  Maybe we can do it in a couple of weeks.  I will put it on my calendar for the week after Labor Day, and put out the word once i have it scheduled. I'll bring the pizza.

my suggestion for the forums

I can see that there is a forum for photography and for current events, etc. But instead it seems like one big forum, rather than individual forums.

A better layout would be that all photograpy discussions or all current event discussions, etc,  were instead filed or shown on their own page. Maybe if there was a list of the forums on the main forum page. Say you wanted to see what was being discussed in photography, you then clicked on photography and  you were brought to a photography forum page where only photography was discussed.

I hope that makes sense. I think it could actually create more discussions or give a sense of a club to those that wish to join in on particular forums.

Wow! I should have looked here first but I got lucky

Another simple challenge: Directly linking to another post I just made in another thread just to save time and fit more puzzle pieces together at the same time.

Here's the link: http://share.triangle.com/node/8402#comment-23290

Oh, and don't forget where you are once there. Remember to come back here before posting! All these blueprint pieces I've put together here so far has got me feeling like a rat in a maze... or is it a rat into some maize? :o)

This is only a test

Note: This is not to scale.

Wow! I never knew until just now that one can simply highlight, copy, and paste from an HTML preview typed up in notepad and saved as an HTML document and then opened before copying, and then to paste it directly here into the text field and preview and then post it.

Yes, I will be looking forwards to find ways to improve the user-friendliness of this site. A lot of the pieces we need may already be present, or at least the prospects do look quite good.

Hmmm... they changed the blueprints now

It appears if this current format is to continue, any photos posted into a thread will either need to be portrait shots or landscape shots scaled down like the one above just to fit within these rigid borders created by those immovable ads...

Missing archive photos: There's a lot missing from mostly sometime after September 7, 2007. Many photos including all those made at Hart's Pumpkin Farm (by myself and others), numerous photos from two tractor pulls, 5 photos of Silver Shaft Mine (scanned 1981 photos) in Cabarrus County, and the list continues... I'm glad I put plenty of text under my photos in addition to the captions, otherwise some that still existed would have been forever lost within these archives, but as for the ones which had both captions and plenty of texts as well that still went missing... maybe those mischievious gnomes with their little mugs of coffee took them after they too escaped...(?) Yes, I know you all who've been here for awhile remember the gnome photos I posted. One good thing is I am no longer embarrased by what used to be a huge user point total which was well over 2000 points as this has been drastically reduced now.

Personally I think the next time some slick salesman tries to sell a new software platform here, the powers that be need to play extreme hardball and not purchase such a platform until after it is tested in real world conditions.

Java55:  We are looking

Java55:  We are looking into the missing photos.  We've heard this from a number of users.

Sizing

The above image of a gold nugget is 450 pixels wide and just does fit within these rigid borders. Will the techies here please make a note of this?
