If you could take time off from work this August and/or September...

Java55

...this year (with pay) for a local photography mission, what/where would you choose?

As for myself, I would love to get out and create a photodocumentary of the harvests in progress from start of finish at some of the farms in central North Carolina, especially around Orange and Chatham Counties. Some of the machinery used at these farms is amazing!

Volunteerism

I've been thinking of volunteer opportunities, ideally in support of a local organization promoting social change.  Any ideas?

Seems a bit broad...

...but the main social change for this local area that I would like to see happening would be a stronger awareness of what it means to practice good land stewardship. A few choice photos taken along Crabtree Creek during the winter months when the foliage is down, say downstream from Capital Blvd, could produce quite a bit of shock value. As for where it would go from there, I have no idea. I guess it would depend upon how initially receptive people are to begin with.

you posed a broad question

you posed a broad question :)  I offer the idea of volunteerism as I know a lot of local organizations can really use a good photographer.  It's just one way to put your talent to good use, get some great photos and help others at the same time.

Been there, done that, well sort of...

...but mostly in Orange County. For the most part I would show up unannounced and shoot a huge round of photos and get to know a few of the folks while at one of these events and then later send them an e-mail invitation to an online photo album I created allowing them to have the opportunity not only to see a photodocumentary and to share it with the rest but also to be able to pick and choose which photos they would like to use for their own purposes as well. Lets see, so far its been a church, a few bluegrass bands, and even a country store. Oh, and the News of Orange County has published a few as well just to name a few :)

a different approach

I work with the organizations ahead of time (vs showing up unannounced).  This provides an opportunity to discuss their specific needs and sometimes get to events that are not generally open to the public.  Also, I get greater access during the event which can make for some unique photos.  Just another approach...

Sketchy timing

My timing is always so sketchy its hard for me to plan anything in advance (stretched too thin, too often), therefor my back-ackwards approach seems more dependable lately. I guess whatever works best for the individual is the way to go...

Volunteer Ideas

I'm sure you've already thought of it, but churches are a great place to start when it comes to volunteer opportunities involving social issues. I know my church works with migrant workers every year, sends a group to Central America, and other projects.

In fact, you've given me a great idea for getting involved and having a good source of photo opportunities! Thanks.

RE: volunteerism

Beyond churches as being a good source for voluteerism in terms of photography some local groups or associations which come to mind in my immediate area though not dealing as much with social change but could always make use of a good photographer or more than one, here's a small list as just a starter for those who may like getting out and about throughout the countryside as well as the parks and natural areas for some good photo ops in addition to the activities at hand.

RE: Voluteerism (2)

Dave, I spotted this today while out and about in southern Orange County. I checked out the site (it's a new upstart site) and they do have a great idea.

I don't know if they could use any photographers but since it's an upstart site one never knows. They do however have an excellent idea. I think much of North Carolina could put this to good use! Its a very similar idea to what the Triangle Land Conservancy already has plus maybe a little more.

Off to Yellowstone et al

See y'all in about 12 days. I'll check in if I get a chance.
