It has taken me six often traumatic years of research and soul searching, but most importantly, I was infused with an undying optimism that I could complete this project. At last it is finished and going to www.iUniverse.com for publication! I will take you on a journey from Vienna, Austria, to Croton-on-Hudson, New York, with visits to Scotland, Israel, Turkey and other parts of the world, and ending in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

This memoir chronicles my upbringing in a family of film makers, a tradition started by my grandfather, André de La Varre, Sr., an Academy Award winner. Other eccentric relatives include: John Merton, a “B” actor in 1930’s westerns; Jean Lafitte, the famous swashbuckling pirate, and William La Varre, who authored several books about his adventures through the jungles of South America, along the Amazon, and into British and Dutch Guyana in search of “gold, diamonds and orchids.”

Unfortunately, my father died in a tragic accident directly caused by his addiction to alcohol. The book also deals with my account of how alcohol slowly destroyed my father – a talented writer, film producer and concert pianist – and how I came to terms with the loss. It has taken me forty-nine years to recognize my own demons… Along the way I've ran twenty-seven marathon and ultramarathons which was my form of therapy.
