Welcome to the photography forum

I'm Robert Miller, Director of Multimedia at The N&O. I lead the multimedia team at our ever-changing news organization. Our team is made up of photojournalists, graphic artists and multimedia producers. I've been at the N&O since 1986. In that time period, I've been a photojournalist, photo editor and director of photography. In January 2007, my job as director of photography transformed into my current role. You'll notice on newsobserver.com that we do more than take pictures. We've expanded our storytelling to incorporate audio, photo slide shows, photo galleries, video and interactive graphics. I'll be checking in on the photo forum from time to time. In the spirit of full disclosure— My 12 year-old son Jacob submits his photos to this site. He's known as jgmlr1. Here's one of his images called "Jagged Clouds". Pretty cool!!!

Like many of the photographers who post to share.triangle.com, Jacob loves the site. He learns a lot by looking at your images and participating. This is your site and his. I have a feeling that this forum will be a special place where photographers share their craft, and inspire each other to be curious about what we see and who we are as a community. The other day, I met avid share.triangle.com photographers dbhorne and java55. Their interest in building a conversation through a photo forum compelled me and my colleagues to take notice of their passion to share beyond the share.triangle.com photo gallery. They want this to be an extension and a compliment to the gallery. This is the beginning. We'll make some tweaks to accommodate your desires or suggestions, as best we can. This is your photo forum. I can't wait to see what you come up with. My favorite dbhorne photo:

Thank you!

A big thanks to the N&O for reaching out to the photography community!  I'm really looking forward to meeting fellow photographers, sharing our art and learning from each other.

All the best.....Dave.

Java55

Kudos!

Likewise, my thanks as well too! I'm also looking forward to getting to know fellow photographers and sharing our experiences, etc here too.

If anyone has anything to post to one of the subforums, do feel free. As for myself, it was a slow day photography-wise on account of the heat during the day and the stagnant air near sunset, or might I say the non-sunset sunset as the sun seemed to have disappeared into a thick haze before it got dark outside this evening.

Welcome Tobrien

Tim,

I checked your site out. You've got some nice images. I can't wait to see your photos on this site. Where did you shoot the photo called albercita that's on your site? Is that something you can post here? i like the lighting and composition.

Thanks.

Thanks for the kind words. I took that shot while on vacation in Mexico. I will do my best to post it today. I tried to post a few last weekend, but I did not succeed.

Photo Ops

First, Thanks to the N&O for creating this forum. I've been pursuing a photography hobby pretty strongly for the past 5-6 years, since I got my first digital camera. Digital made it possible to pursue a hobby that was very expensive when I first got interested way back in high school. And no, I don't think I'll say how long ago that was.

One of the challenges I am running into lately is finding good places to take photos. I've gone to the mall and gotten dirty looks from people and shop owners who evidently don't like their picture taken. I've visited local parks and arboretums. I'm just plain running out of ideas.

The past couple of weeks, I have spent quite a bit of time in my back yard taking pictues of insects and other creatures I've found there. Can anyone else make any suggestions?

Referring to the dirty looks, there is a street photography technique you could use that involves aiming the camera from down low.  Most of the time they won't know that you snapped a shot at them and the person won't try to "look good for the camera" here is an example of that technique in my [jgmlr1] photo entitled "Quitting Time".

leesc,Malls are a tough

leesc,

Malls are a tough place to shoot photos. Often, shop owners or workers, in area malls, are generally told that photos are not allowed to be taken in their shops or of their store fronts.  They have their reasons for this. Malls are a public place. You should keep your camera with you. You may see something interesting or even newsworthy to take a photo of.

Here are some potentially good locations and subjects:

NC Zoo in Asheboro, area parks and greenways, flea markets (state fairgrounds) upcoming festivals and fairs like La Fiesta del Pueblo and Greek Festival  (both in Sept. at State Fairgrounds), The State Fair (Oct.) football games, tailgators, fall colors along greenways, mountains, etc., Pullen Park, downtown street scenes, parades, marching band festivals, night photography.

Surf the web and check out photos and subjects that may peak your interest. The possibilities are endless. Check out the photography newsobserver.com or in the N&O. The photo galleries and images in the paper can give you ideas as well.

as far as great places to

as far as great places to shoot in the Triangle, there are so many I don't think there are enough hrs in the day to even begin to scratch the surface. My favorites include, Lake Wheeler, Lake Crabtree, Jordan Lake, Umpstead Park, NC State Rose Garden, Fayetteville St., Duke Gardens, The State Fairgrounds, American Tobacco Trail, and the list goes on! If you are looking for people shots, ask your friends and family to pose for you. You'd be surprised how easy it is once you ask.

By the way Java 55, I think

By the way Java 55, I think I have pics of the same beach houses. Check out my website http://www.photo.net/photos/1000wordsphotography on photo.net, I think it is there.
