| junior (high school), jordan high school durham Achievements: Katie is a rising junior at durham's jordan high school. As a freshmen she started the school's chapter of "newborns in need". Almost twenty students meet regularly to talk, crochet and quilt blankets, hats and scarves for babies. All of ther efforts are donated to the neonatal intensive care units at UNC and Duke hospitals as well as local homeless shelters. Katie continues to serve as the chapter president. She is an honor student at jordan and is active on the field hockey team. This summer she is volunteering at Duke hospital spending 30 to 40 hours a week helping to entertain children as they wait for various tests or doctors visits. She also works part time at a local fitness center in their daycare center. She hopes to enter medicine in the future pursing a career as a pediatric oncologist. Submitted by: craig hoffmeier |
