Shane Williams
senior (high school), Southeast Raleigh High School

Achievements:
Shane Williams, a rising senior at Southeast Raleigh High School is deserving of a gold star honor because he is an honor student who is highly academically-motivated with a deep interest in humanitarian causes. He is the founder of "A Time to Give Thanks Program" that sends care packages to our troops in Iraq during the Christmas holidays as well as during the year. His purpose is to boost their moral and to let them know how important their commitment and sacrifice is. The idea originated when Shane heard a teacher at Southeast describe conditions faced by her two sons serving in Iraq. It involved the collection and packaging of contributions such as baked goods, small gifts, personal items, etc., made by family, friends, neighbors and church members and sending them to the troops. Shane wanted to show support to the men and women of our military who selflessly and willingly protect us. Shane also has a family member who is serving in Iraq. Continuing his desire to serve, Shane has volunteered to spend his summer break serving in the Sacred Valled of Peru with an organization called "Projects Abroad". He will be teaching English and working in a care and community center in the rural countryside of Chinchero. Shane is the type of person who sees a need and wants to do his part to make a differene in the world. He will be working alongside life-long volunteers who dedicate themselves to humanitarian causes. This mission will also compliment Shane's desire to practice International Law after completing college.
