| third grade, Zeb Vance Elementary - Vance County Achievements: (This nomination is actually for a teacher rather than a student) Patrick Sutton Special Education Teacher at Zeb Vance Elementary-Henderson, NC Patrick teaches Special Needs children at Zeb Vance Elementary in Vance County. His children, grades 3-5, have emotional, behavioral, physical, and learning issues. Patrick initiated two programs for his kids. The first one involves the opening and running of a school supplies store within Zeb Vance. His kids man the store, decide what needs to be sold at the store, count money, make change, etc.(teaching them many real world skills they might not receive otherwise). The proceeds from this store have funded an end-of-year school trip for his kids to Carowinds over the course of the last two years (see attached photos). This included paying for the childrens' admissions, their parent/guardian admissions, the chartered bus to ferry them to and from Henderson to Charlotte, and meal money while on the trip. The second program is designed to provide his kids and their siblings with Christmas gifts. Patrick solicits donations from all quarters of Henderson (and some out of town/state contributors). With these contributions, his kids and their at-home siblings are provided with toys and clothing at Christmas. They also have a Christmas party, complete with a visit from Santa, where they are presented with their gifts along and get to talk to Santa. This is particularly meaningful for the majority of these kids since they are from an intensely poverty ridden section of Vance County. Thanks for your consideration.
