State employee parking spaces

danbarkin

State Sen. Janet Cowell has proposed, in a budget amendment, limiting the number of reserved parking spaces available to state employees in Raleigh. Her goal is to encourage commuting alternatives, such as carpooling, vanpooling and bus riding. You can read more about her proposal here.

What do you think of Senator Cowell's idea?

Ridiculous. Make parking

Ridiculous. Make parking inconvenient for everyone. Why? for some misguided notion that downtown revitalization will work here when it fails everywhere else? For more parking so taxpayer money can be used to fund more business ventures downtown? This bozo needs to go back to Pennsylvania.

"Nobody has done the official math, but Cowell figures her plan would expand state parking capacity by at least 800 spaces.

That's close to the number -- 905 parking spots --to be added in a $20 million parking deck the legislature authorized last year. Cowell's budget provision would halt the planned deck."

That from the article- isn't this the same deck that the City refused to approve, and the State then tried to get a law passed saying that State projects are not subject to local planning rules?

""And then to take away the ability for state employees to park is kind of ludicrous, as they have to perform their duties on a daily basis.""

So does everyone else who works. Duh. Lots of downtown workers have to look for spaces.

State employee parking

Dear Sen. Cowell:

When you and the rest of the Legislature start paying state employees market wages, they will no longer need or want subsidized parking.

What made you hate them, anyway?

I wonder if any of the 12,000 state employees who work in Raleigh plan to vote for you.

State Employee Parking

Am I the only one noticing that state employees seem to be the red headed step-child? It seems every week someone is trying to remove any little incentive that a state employee may have. Parking supposedly has been a serious issue for any state employee working in downtown Raleigh. Apparently, there has been a constant shortage of parking spaces for many years. Some employees may have played musical cars; trying to find parking spaces through out the work day.

Is there a general statue requiring state agencies to provide a parking space per employee?

Imagine, an office building that has fifty employees. Every employee is a neccessity. Office chairs have become a limited commodity. Some employees arrive very early in the morning to ensure they have an office chair. Others, aren't as fortunate. Some chairs were assigned per seniority and many have to find their own chairs. Yes, some employees would have to find a chair available and lease it per the hour.

Sound a little rediculous? How many citizens of the state would pay a daily fee for parking? Probably not too many.

Seems like some people may not be satisfied until every state employee has quit or filed bankruptcy.
