National Commission Calls for Public Comment on CAFOs

Washington D.C.--A public hearing on the possible public health, environmental, rural community, and animal health impacts of concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) sponsored by the National Commission on Industrial Farm Animal Production (NCIFAP) will be held in Durham, North Carolina on Tuesday, April 10th beginning at 4:00 p.m. at the Durham Armory.

Public hearings are one component of the Commission’s 2-year examination of the food animal production model commonly known as intensive or confined animal feeding operations, where hundreds-- and often times thousands-- of animals are raised in one location. Many issues the NCIFAP is addressing include but are not limited to: Swine manure and waste disposal systems; air and water pollution concerns; agricultural zoning issues; and zoonotic and foodborne diseases, such as avian influenza, Salmonella, and E. coli.

Those interested in participating are encouraged to pre-register on the NCIFAP website at www.ncifap.org <
http://www.ncifap.org>  or send a fax to 202-223-3947. Those without access to a fax or computer may call toll free at 1-866-730-FARM or mail their contact information to 1900 L Street, NW, Suite 312, Washington, DC, 20036. The public hearing rules and procedures are posted on the website. The pre-registration deadline is April 2nd at midnight Pacific Standard Time.
