Pack gets Verbal Commitment from Junior College DE Antonie Holmes...

Derreck

http://ncstate.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=1&pr_key=60775

Holmes was named the conference defensive player of the year after making 40 total tackles, 34 of them solo, 18 tackles for losses and eight sacks. He was a first-team All-American by NJCAA and second-team selection by JC Gridwire.

Holmes was actually a RB outta HS. He rushed for 1,143 yards and 17 TD's. He also went 43-0 his senior year as a wrestler, winning the group AA state championship as a heavyweight.

He is 6'3", 275lbs and runs the 40 in 4.6 seconds. He will likely move to DT at NC State. Frankly he reminds me of John McCargo. A Big, physical kid who was a RB in HS and just out grew the position.

Huge Pickup

"Daddy, how could Santa not bring me the entire store? I am just too darn cute."

A Big Get for the Pack. Geoirga and FSU among others were looking at this kid.

Sounds good

I know 275 lbs is alot to get moving, but I'd like to see a little more speed than 4.6.  Speed kills on defense.  The speed of Florida's defense in the BCS championship was unbelievable.  That'swhat we need.

Hopefully O'Brien&Co. will make him quicker.

BTW, as a JuCo transfer, he eligible immediately, correct?

correct matt

Matt, yes he will be able to play immediately.

huh?

I thought 4.6 speed for DL was pretty fast.  I don't think Manny Lawson was too much faster than that and he was known for being fast.

Football Speed

I think we are fine with that 4.6 40 time...   Our most sought after DE, Linwan Euwell, is also posting a 4.6 time.

Not to say speed isn't nice to have, but playing disciplined football, honoring assignments, and trusting the guy next to you will yield better results than speed alone.

Granted it is not world

Granted it is not world class speed, 4.6 is NFL speed for a 275 lb D-lineman.  I will venture to say that even in the top 10 D-1 college programs you have RBs and WRs that are 4.6 and slower who contribute.  When you see players who are clocked in the 4.2 to 4.3 range you have to realize that that is not the norm.

I beleive their is too much emphasis placed on 40 times.  There are alot of great players that are quick from point A to point B during scrimmage that are not that impressive on 40 times.  Alot of programs, especially with their lineman, time their players in a 10 yard sprint.  That is much more important in football.

To say a 275 pound lineman that runs a 4.6 40 is not fast is not reality.

I beleive their is too much

Cotchery was considered slow by this metric.  There are other more important elements involved, not the least of which is "game speed".

Didn't say he was slow, just

Didn't say he was slow, just wished he was quicker, that's all.

4.6 speed is not uncommon anymore.

Did some checking

Matt's comments had me curious as to what was considered quick for a defensive ends versus what we have currently recruited:

4.57  Super Mario

4.60  Holmes

4.77  Sweezy

4.60  Euwell

4.60  Rieskamp

Couldn't find a time for Manny... would be curious to see where he is at.

Looks like he's on par with

Looks like he's on par with the rest of our players, just like I said.

Where can I find those same numbers for the Florida Gator defense?  So far this morning I've read 3 different articles about how freakin fast they are, but no one gave numbers.
