Entrepreneurial networking and prospecting tips help Meredith College students find jobs
RALEIGH, N.C. – When global marketer Lea-Ann W. Berst walked into a Meredith College lecture hall, she saw a sea of faces eager to learn about living and working abroad. One month later, on Friday April 9, Berst and two other Raleigh businesswomen, Jan Delory and Donna Hall, return to Meredith for a conversational presentation about networking and job prospecting.
"In March, I stepped out of the business school lecture hall to find myself surrounded by students eager to ask me questions. As we talked, the numbers grew and the topic changed from global business to the U.S. economy and then to finding work in this economy," said Berst. "My heart just sank. All I knew was how I find customers…and they were glued to every tip I shared."
Meredith professor, Dr. Carolyn Nye, recognized the value in this discussion and asked Berst to return for a more conversational lecture with her students.
"But after seeing the student emails grow in my Inbox, I realized I needed to deliver more than just a 'chat'. I needed the smartest women I know to share their experiences on networking and job prospecting with these young women," shared Berst. Donna Hall with Raleigh Consulting Group (RCG) and Jan Delory with Sales Vantage Point agreed to join Berst in order to thoroughly cover this topic.
Donna Hall (Management Consultant at RCG) is offering participants an online assessment. Students will bring their results to the April 9th lecture. Hall will explain how and why this type of assessment is important to the industry the students want to work in, to selecting a career, and to their job interviews. “People want satisfying and meaningful work. Employers want to save money. Both can be accomplished by using targeted assessments to get a great job fit from the start," said Hall. "The students’ assessments will give them valuable information on their own behavioral and motivational preferences as they prospect for work. Once hired, they’ll tend to match the job well and the employer has the advantage of a good return on their hiring investment. Then, everyone’s happy.”
Jan Delory (Business Development Consultant) will tag-team with Berst to explain branding, delivery, interviewing, and follow-up tips used by entrepreneurs to grow and keep their customer base. “Prospecting for employment is very similar to prospecting for new business; many of the same rules apply. Explaining the concepts that top professionals use to land new clients will aid the students in landing a job regardless of economic conditions,” states Delory.
As graduation approaches, college students are realizing they need to set themselves apart. Ms. Berst, Ms. Hall and Ms. Delory are committed to helping students take a proactive approach to job hunting through self assessment and structured prospecting. Berst said, "Whether these students need a part time job now or full time employment after graduation, we want them to be able to walk away with a wealth of prospecting information that will help them jumpstart their careers."
