Should presidents go to media bigwigs instead of we the people?

Given the way media outlets are being bought- a few people owning many of the biggest names-- Are we barking up the wrong tree discussing big issues (does it matter)- is the president selling his messages to the wrong people (people vs bigwigs like Rupert Murdoch)?

Mark Rogers, CEO, Market Sentinel- his advice to Obama-

"if you can persuade rupert murdoch that your reform is beneficial to Rupert Murdoch then you might get it through"*

*may not be an exact quote; I transcribed it myself.

Start the player around 4min 30sec for the part I'm referencing.

Add monkeywrench: Rupert Murdoch vs. Google

I know its almost couple of months later since you posted this but since the Rupert Murdoch vs. Google issue has erupted one might think getting any kind of balanced information is going to become even more difficult especially for the masses without -extra- money because if others follow his lead the 'free press' may soon become a commodity that only those with wealth (and any interest) can afford accessing for all the differing points of view from world-wide sources for use in drawing any educated opinions as sometimes one will need to step outside the box to get a better look inside it.
