Ancient Stone Mortar

Ancient Stone Mortar

This ancient stone mortar made by Native Americans many centuries if not thousands of years ago was used with a stone pestle (not present in photo) for the grinding of grain and other foods. It was found while plowing a field a number of years ago and now resides at the Freeman Cabin at Ole Gilliam Mill Park.

old stone

Very interesting stone Java. It looks like it has some carved detailing around the edge(circles?).

Circles

I really had not noticed this when photographing it, and I have photographed this stone more than a few occasions and finally coming up with a decent shot to post here.

But! ...my honest opinion is these patterns are probably due to the way the original stone was extracted from a much larger rock when it was first manufactured into something functional for those distant times.
