TRIANGLE PLAYERS HONORED
The Triangle produces outstanding soccer players on a variety of levels. Among the latest to be recognized are two chosen Monday to the 18-member Disney’s Soccer Showcase All-Star Team during a ceremony at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
James Williams, 16, of Raleigh and the Capital Area Soccer League’s Chelsea FC Academy USSF, and German Mendoza, 16, of Durham and the Triangle United Gold will join 16 other Under-17 stars who have been invited by English Premier League team Chelsea Football Club to train and compete against top professional clubs near London in August, Disney said in a news release. Also invited was Glen Long, 17, of Greensboro, who also plays for Triangle United Gold. A complete roster is below.
Disney's Soccer Showcase presented by Chelsea Football Club is taking place at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex from Dec. 27, 2008, through Jan. 3, 2009. More that 400 teams - and more than 7,000 of the top boys and girls youth soccer players (U15-U18) - from across the nation are participating, and nearly 700 college coaches are expected to scout the action.
