McCain Shoots ACORN at Obama
McCain-Palin accuse ACORN, an organization that helps voters register, of perpetrating "massive voter fraud," and they say that Obama has "long and deep" ties to the group. FactCheck finds both claims to be exaggerated. (FactCheck.org is a nonpartisan organization founded by a wealthy Republican to monitor what candidates say.)
The fact is that several ACORN $8-an-hour employees have been found guilty of faking registration forms and others are being investigated. But the evidence that has surfaced so far shows they faked forms to get paid for work they didn’t do, not to stuff ballot boxes. In fact, a Republican prosecutor said that the "scheme was not intended to permit illegal voting."
This is not the first time that employees have faked work to get paid, is it? But that does not mean that the employer is guilty of anything except inadequate supervision.
Obama has been supportive of ACORN because he believes in the right of citizens to vote, but to call it "long and deep" ties is an exaggeration, if not a lie.
If McCain were still practicing the "Straight Talk" we admired him for just a few months ago, he would say that Obama had ties with a voter-registration organization called ACORN that supervised its employee so poorly that a few of them faked voter registrations in order to get paid. That straight-talk truth is a long way from "massive voter fraud," isn’t it?
Where is the McCain we knew and respected when he would rather lose than lie?
