I just read some of the comments to the articles about the handicapped parking abuses in downtown and all over Raleigh and Wake County. The insensitive comments just make my blood boil.
I need a special device so I can drive a car. That means that I am limited to only driving my car and my husband's car. We have 2 tags so I don't have to remember to move them from car to car. Someone suggested that we could save money and do away with 2 tags. They suggested that we only have 2 tags so Uncle Sam can get a cappaciino. Give me a break.
Someone else was bored with the topic and wanted the Worrier column to find something more important to talk about. I guess that person never had to try and walk after 2 major hips surgeries. Someone else suggested that we just need to push back from the table - that we had the tags cause we were too fat.
I don't always use the handicapped spots. Sometimes the spaces nearer to the door are open and not handicapped. Sometimes I have to walk from far away because of the louts who abuse the spaces.
It would be easy to put the license picture or state ID picture on the placards. Many states are starting to do that. NC should do this also. It can help with abuse.
Just be glad that you don't have to use a handicapped space and need to drive a specially equipped car.

Handicap Plates are Free
When my mom moved up here, and after I registered her car for her, I asked about the handicap issue. They gave me a form for her doctor and with that filled out and for $5, we got the thing that hangs on the mirror. I recently discovered that with a different form, you get new plates and there is no charge. Both of them are good for five years but if you ask the wrong question...
