The National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS) had an important
breakthrough today – literally. The Institute broke the wall down that divided its existing building with the new wing that is
under construction at its headquarters in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.
The 11,782-square-foot addition will house the Statistical
and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute (SAMSI), which has
been currently leasing the second floor of NISS’ original building,
as well as classroom and lunchroom facilities shared by NISS and
SAMSI. It was designed by O’Brien/Atkins of Research Triangle
Park, as was the award-winning existing building, which was
constructed in 1997.
SAMSI is a consortium of Duke University, North Carolina
State University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill,
and NISS. Its mission is to forge a new synthesis of the statistical
sciences and the applied mathematical sciences with disciplinary
science to confront the very hardest and most important data- and
model-driven scientific challenges.
“SAMSI’s move into the new wing will free up space for
NISS to continue to expand,” remarked Dr. Alan Karr, Director
of NISS. “The success of NISS and SAMSI is reflected in this
building expansion. The two institutes are attracting more and more
statisticians and applied mathematicians to come to RTP. Now we
will have the space to accommodate them while they visit.”
The new wing is expected to be completed in mid-October.
A ribbon cutting ceremony is planned for November 7.
About NISS
The National Institute of Statistical Sciences was established in 1990 by the national statistics societies and the Research Triangle universities and organizations, with the mission to identify, catalyze and foster high-impact, cross-disciplinary and cross-sector research involving the statistical sciences. NISS is dedicated to strengthening and serving the national statistics community, most notably by catalyzing community members’ participation in applied research driven by challenges facing government and industry. NISS also provides career development opportunities for statisticians and
scientists, especially those in the formative stages of their careers.
