The debate is ongoing. Should there be sex education in schools or should schools teach abstinence only? Should either be taught in schools or should it be up to parents to teach kids what they want?
The legislation was not Obama's, it never became law and it would have required age-appropriate information in schools. Obama has said that means warning young children about SEXUAL PREDATORS and explaining concepts like "good touch and bad touch." All of the quotes are taken out of context. I'm disappointed that McCain would approve this type of scare tactic.
If it were absolute truth that kids do what parents teach them, then I'd go with abstinence only. Since this isn't true, I think abstinece should be taught, discussed, put forth as the only 100% effective birth control and disease protection, BUT sex education is needed. Hopefully, parents will have talked to their kids about it before the school does, though.
Also, abstinence only may be more effective (or not?) among those whose religious beliefs fall in line with that. Those taught abstinece only who don't believe that way may not have the motivation to abstain and will be more at risk for all the things sex ed may have helped them avoid.
Teach education
Kids today need something because they are getting themselves in situations they can't handle. They need to be taught how to be safe. Period.
