"King of the castle!"

I happened to look up for some reason (I think i heard some squawking) and spotted the heron right at the top of this tree which must be over 60 feet! I wondered if herons typically hang out at the top of tall trees? Most of the time I see them at the lake side.

Heron

Yes, they do 'hang out in tall trees'.  In the early spring Great Blues also nest in tall trees.  I have seen dozens of nest along a canal that runs adjacent to the Cape Fear River.  You could see the Great Blues flying all around the nest.  That was about 5 years ago but I will never forget the wonderful experience of observing the birds.

heron behavior

That sounds awesome-when we were at Wrightsville earlier this year a flock of heron flew over the beach at sunset -unfortunately they were too far away for a decent photo but were  a pretty amazing sight. I am keen to "capture" a heron in flight but so far no luck:(  I probably need to spend a day in a good heron location, armed with camera, tripod and loads of patience!!
