Grayson Murray of Raleigh, one of the region’s outstanding junior golfers, shot a final-round 69 and won the 19th annual Jack Ratz Jr. Memorial Golf Tournament played Aug. 4-5, 2008, at Wildwood Green Golf Club in Raleigh.
Murray finished with a two-day total of 140 to best a field of more than 70 male and female golfers ages 6-18.
The 9-and-under age group played six holes daily, the 10-11 group played nine daily and the 12-13, 14-15 and 16-18 groups played full 18-hole rounds each day, said Chris Ingram, the new head golf professional at Wildwood Green Golf Club. The girls division also played 18 holes.
Jack Ratz Jr. was a member of Wildwood Green Golf Club and a freshman at Cardinal Gibbons High School when he died in a car accident at age 15. His family donated $1,000 to his CGHS Memorial Scholarship Fund in the names of the tournament flight champions.
Over the years, 18 incoming Cardinal Gibbons freshman have received more than $39,000 in tuition assistance, said Ratz’s father, who is the tournament chairman and continues to organize the event each year. Besides the competition, a theme of the event is encouraging teenage driver safety and highlighting the catastrophic effects of even a few seconds of careless behavior, Ratz Sr. says.
The tournament has been sanctioned by the Triangle Junior Golf Association as a qualifying event. In 2007, 93 junior golfers participated. Trophies are awarded for first- through third-place positions in each flight. For information about future tournaments, contact Wildwood Green at (919) 846-8376.
