YWCA Academy of Women Awards Call for Nominations

RALEIGH, N.C. – The YWCA of the Greater Triangle invites nominations for its 26th annual Academy of Women awards, which recognizes outstanding area women who are committed to improving the social and economic conditions that impact girls, women and their families in our community. The nomination deadline is noon on Friday, August 8, 2008. Inductees to the Class of 2008 YWCA Academy of Women will be recognized at an awards ceremony November 12, 2008.

The Academy of Women awards recognize remarkable women who have excelled in their field while achieving results in working toward the YWCA's mission of empowering women and eliminating racism. Established in 1983, the Academy now boasts 222 women of extraordinary accomplishment in the categories of Arts & Entertainment, Business, Community Service, Education, Entrepreneur, Exercise & Sports Science, Government, Health & Human Services, Professions, Science & Technology, and Teen Woman.

“The women selected to join this prestigious honor society are among the most accomplished and talented leaders in our region,” said Julie Seibert, director of development, YWCA of the Greater Triangle. “We are proud to recognize dedicated businesswomen, artists, volunteers, public servants, educators and others who work tirelessly and with enthusiasm, each in their own unique way, to eliminate racism and sexism in our region.”

Nominations for the award may be submitted by individuals, businesses and community or civic organizations. Each individual or group may submit only one nomination in each of the 11 categories. One woman may be nominated in up to two categories by each nominating party. The nomination packet can be downloaded from the YWCA Web site. Questions regarding nominations should be directed to Julie Seibert at 919.834.7386 x 21 or jseibert@ywcatriangle.org.

Academy of Women inductees are selected through a formal evaluation process that includes review of the nominee’s qualifications and her commitment to the YWCA mission. Final selections are made by a judging committee made.

The YWCA of the Greater Triangle is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to the elimination of racism and the empowerment of women.
