Did you get the new iPhone?

|

N&O reporters squared off over the iPhone. Jonathan B. Cox, a fan of gadgets, says its invaluable. Vicki Lee Parker considers it a very expensive and unnecessary toy. Which one's right? Tell us your opinion.

Got my 3G iPhone!

After waiting in line for HOURS (once for 4 hours at the AT&T store in Cary, which sold out & then again for 5 hours at the Apple Store at Crabtree), I was finally among the last to be able to get one before the store closed for the night.

While the waiting was boring & tedius (& stressful...we weren't sure we'd get one), it was expected. What we didn't expect was the nightmare that some of us had to endure once we finally entered the store.

It took nearly TWO HOURS to get my phone activated once in the store. Even though I'm a Raleigh resident I had to get a Chapel Hill phone number because I was told AT&T "ran out of numbers for Raleigh". Finally after a 5 hour wait outside the store & 2 hours inside the store the phone was activated and I was on my way. Except, oops...the "phone" works, but my data plan (Internet, email, etc.) wasn't set up and that didn't work! Now it's too late to go back, the store is closed. Finally, after calling AT&T I was able to get it running correctly.

A very VERY long day. I'm stressed out, tired, & exhausted but I got one! And so far from what I can see...I like it...A LOT!

Not bad

I was one of the crazy people who went out early to Crabtree and got my iPhone frist. I had no problems. It was a very easy experience.

Rather than stand in line

Rather than stand in line and wait for activation as the 11hrs above, I waited till early in the afternoon when the att store was out went in and paid for the next shipment and had my phone on Tuesday. It took me about 10mins to order and about 30mins to get set up and that included a second phone.

I have to say a great phone. The first phone that really takes out the blackberry. With the 3g and MS exchange and push for business e-mails, why have a blackberry anymore? A real browser, built in gps chip...the list goes on.

Probably the best phone available today in terms of functionality, productivity, ease of use and flexibility.

Happy

I wasn't sure I wanted a mobile phone, I haven't yet had one.  (They way they are used can be _so_ annoying.)  But I did know that I wanted mobile internet.  I'd tried out one of the Nokia internet tablets a couple of years ago.  It was great, but limited to WiFi for it's connections.  After trying the iPhone out at the Apple store, I knew I really wanted one.  Everything worked very well, including e-mail, web and even sync'ing.

Yes, it's a luxury and probably too expensive for what it provides.  And, yes, I really do wish it were an open platform.  But the thing does work very well, and with the user and developer communities forming around it, I believe it will be the mobile platform to beat for some time to come.  When the Nokia, Android or other platforms catch up, I'll be the first to switch, but for now the iPhone is making me happy.

I picked it up on Sunday morning at Crabtree.  I was about fourth in line.  Total process probably took about 30 minutes.  Only painful part was agreeing to that 2 year AT&T contract.

I love my new iPhone, as a

I love my new iPhone, as a matter of fact I added this comment using it. Everything about this phone was perfectly thought out and couldn't have been done better. Though the rate plans are a bit much, it is well worth it. I went to the at&t store on it's release day, and though it was sold out when I got there, I was able to get one shipped to the AT&T store. Though I was dissapointed when they told me it would be 7-10 days, it got there in only 5. I do reccomend that you get a case for it, as well as a screen protector. The software is also delicate-don't try to do too many things on it at once or it will freeze up on you. I want to congratulate apple on making the best phone ever and would highly reccomend it to anybody who is looking for a new phone. I have tried the blackberrys an this beats them down to the ground. iPhones ROCK!!!!!!

iPhone

I was given one for Father's day--which I didn't truly need since I have a company cell phone (Motorola Razr). Picked it up in San Jose, CA, while vacationing. Short wait in line at the Apple Store in the Mall, and looooong wait to get it activated. Also got the Mobile Me service which seems to be working good. Internet access, mobile email, calendar and contacts wirelessly synced to office and home computers, great 2 mega pixel camera, built in iPod, games of all types. Oh, and it is a mobile phone too. On the minus side, DO NOT enjoyed being locked into AT&T service, the battery needs to be frequently charged, and the "virtual" keyboard takes some getting used to. I took a look at BlackBerry--no comparison, the iPhonr BLOWS them away

Passed

I passed on the iPhone 3G and got myself a Samsung Omnia instead. Happy with my choice. Tried out my sister's iPhone 3G for a few days and it's not really for me.
