This man was not a patriot as some have said today. For most of my life, I have been disgusted by his lack of sensitivity, humanity and humility. I can only hope that at this very moment he is face to face with real christians holding him to account for the bitterness, hate and narrow mindedness that he proudly proclaimed all of his life. I hope we never see his like again.

I agree with you - Jesse indeed left a SAD legacy. The world is a much better place without him in it!
You miss the essence of Jesse Helms--he never wore any CLOAK. He was the essence of our state slogan: Esse quam videri, "to BE and not to SEEM. Too bad you did not enjoy the true character of this great statesman and genteel person who worked hard to look out for YOUR interests in the US Senate.
Jesse Helms was not woking for my interests in the US Senate and he wasn't working for yours either. In fact, he was working real hard doing what he did best- being a racist. I'm not celebrating his death, but I'm glad that there is one less racist in the world today.
I agree with "Visitor" except I would choose a word other than "progress" to describe what Jesse was against. Jesse was for the status quo of 1950 where white males made the rules.
As a native North Carolinian, I've always believed the vitriol spewed by Jesse Helms gave aid and comfort to those who believed that it was justifiable to bomb a church in Birmingham, Ala to bombing a federal building in Oklahoma.
There is no justification for anyone to remember Jesse Helms as anything other than a man who sought to divide people using race, fear and prejudice as his weapons.
Good riddance to the disgraceful legacies of Jesse Helms and Strom Thurmond and all the rest who, while waving the flag and proclaiming their patriotism, did more to threaten the core and security of our nation and its future than any foreign power could ever hope to accomplish.
How could you miss all of the wonderful things that Mr. Helms gave to this country? Without him Ronald Reagan would have been just a 3rd rate actor. Instead he gave thousands of Democrats a new way to describe themselves - Reagan Democrats - instead of the way they had been previously thought of - RACISTS. And without Mr. Helms there would have been no Karl Rove and no Bush I and Bush II - and there would be over 4,000 brave young people still alive in this country, and there would be an economy that was not going down hill rapidly, and we would still have a Constitution that applied to all people, and on and on. Don't you see the beauty of the Jesse Helms legacy? No - well either do I!
I think he was the greatest Senator this nation ever had. I lived in North Carolina with my husband for 9 years while he was stationed at Fort Bragg. My oldest son had a siezure when he was almost 4 years old. I believed the seizure was from when he ran through the house and hit his head on a heavy wooden table. The seizure happened immediately. A doctor at Womack Army hospital thought differently and prescribed an anti-seizure medication. I was not happy with the diagnosis, because the doctor was an adult neurologist not a pediatric neurologist. I called Senator Helms office and told them of the situation . Within one day my family physician, who had not made this diagnosis, called me and asked if I wanted to take my son to Walter Reed or Chapel Hill to be seen by a pediatric neurologist. I opted for Chapel Hill and I never knew what the charges were for the many visits I took there. The doctors at Chapel Hill agreed that my son did not need seizure medicine and watched him for 2 years after that, to be sure.
Also during Operation Desert Storm myself and another lady organized a support the troop rally. Even though Senator Helms was unable to attend he sent a letter for me to read to the people who came. I believe that we need more Senator like him to support the Christians and to stand for what is true and right. He will definitely be misse by all who believed in him.
Helms' legacy
Jesse Helms' death is to be mourned as much as any person's.
His passing does not, however, obscure his legacy of racism and anger, both of which are the antithesis of Christianity (which he regularly cloaked himself with).
Great men are known by what they were FOR. What PROGRESS did they play a role in. Mr. Helms is known for what he was AGAINST and for his efforts to STOP progress. A sad legacy indeed.
