Destructive Japanese Beetle

Destructive Japanese Beetle

I made this photo of a Japanese Beetle on 6/02/08 on a road side wildflower.  The beetles are well known for destroying flowers and especially  lilies, hibiscus and other tubular flowering plants.

It's all about point of view

That's its feed crop, no less so than the thousands of acres of flowers grown -- and summarily cut -- each year for human "consumption."

A Raleigh developer permanently destroys more of nature on a slow afternoon than a million of these little guys could devour in their combined, brief lifetimes.

Japanese Beetle

I don't use insectisides on my flowers or vegetables, insects are a healthy choice for the numerous varieties of birds that visit my backyard.  But, when it comes to Japanese beetles the birds cannot pierce their tough shells and I don't have any problem putting a beetle trap out to catch them.

I'm impressed with the colors in the beetle's shell. I throught they were just those pesky black bugs that like to eat my roses.
