Meredith Students Earn Biology Research Awards

Meredith College students recently presented research at the Beta Beta Beta Southeastern Region Annual Meeting, held April 16-19, 2008. 

Student speakers were Brittany Ross, ’08, Molly Aiken, ’08, Erica Beals,’08, and Preethi Sriram, ’08. Emily Kale, ’09, and Rebecca Vannoy, ’08 did poster presentations. 


Meredith’s student presenters earned awards for their work. Ross received a third place award, Aiken and Kale both earned honorable mentions. Kale was also elected president of Beta Beta Beta’s Southeastern Region District I. 

The event, which was co-hosted by Furman University and Wofford College in Greenville-Spartanburg, S.C., was held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Association of Southeastern Biologists (ASB).

           

In addition to the student presentations, Meredith Assistant Professor of Biology Karthik Aghoram presented during the ASB meeting. He represented Meredith’s HIV/AIDS research group, which consists of Aghoram, Professor of Biology John Mecham, Professor of Chemistry Walda Powell and Kenyatta University faculty member Michael Otieno. Aghoram’s presentation highlighted different aspects of HIV research being conducted at Meredith College in collaboration with Kenyatta University.

Beta Beta Beta is the national biological honor society. Beta Beta Beta is a society for students, particularly undergraduates, dedicated to improving the understanding and appreciation of biological study and extending boundaries of human knowledge through scientific research.
