Submarine USS North Carolina

The signposts in this cartoon should also include
Moscow and China; both of which still have nucular missiles
amimed at Washington, or Norfolk or Wilmington
Al Qaida does not need a navy, when they can use Iran's or China's or Russia's
You would be a good military advisor to Ms. Purdue
P.S. Your cartoons are great

Legitimacy of a great navy

THE TERRORIST CELLS MAY NOT HAVE A NAVY SUCH AS OURS, (thank god), BUT BEWARE OF THEIR ESPIONAGE, INFILTRATION, ETC. Their tactics may be 'primitive, barbaric; but they have been effective many times against an army that has had a monopoly on technological advances. Though it is 'Hollywood', the 'ewok' armies defeated the evil empire's attempts to succumb them. Like the ewoks, many of these cells are fighting on 'home ground' and their methodology serves them well enough to end the lives of 4000 of our servicemen plus harass their enemies on their own home soil i.e WTC, Pentagon and a host of other targets. WHAT THEN SHALL WE DO?

I am personally glad, though, that we have technological superiority via $ 2.3 billion investment(s).I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO OBSERVE THE COMMISSIONING OF THE USS NORTH CAROLINA (SSN-777). THOUGH I AM NOT LEARNED ABOUT ALL THE NEW TECHNOLOGIES THAT ARE ONBOARD THIS 'CRAFT' I AM GLAD THIS SHIP IS ON 'OUR SIDE'.It was not said how these advances can and will be used in fighting terrorism , only that there are counter-terrorist capabilities aboard. I am glad that the North Carolina stands ready and is already underway to 'cover the bases with her sisterships, above and below the great seas and oceans that cover the expanse of the earth!

USS North Carolina

I like the Powelltoons, but this one shows the author's exceptional ignorance and naivete' of things military. The price tag was indeed high, but the outlandish caricature of the Naval Officer was uncalled for and was rude and insulting. True, the sub may not help much in the Al Qaida wars, but we cannot always be preparing to fight the last war or even the ones we have going on now.

I suspect it will be useful near the Taiwan Straits if needed, and I believe it will be. Trying to control two thirds of the earth's surface with three hundred ships ain't easy.

This Outlandish Insult

Hi. I am a US Navy Sailor. My husband is a member of the crew of that submarine that you depicted (very disresectfully) as overpriced and captained by an ignoramous. Now, I understand that you may not support the military because you're a liberal or some such stupidity, and maybe think that the war should end and that all the service members should be brought home. Well, let me clue you in. First of all. Those servicemembers mostly joined the navy because they were FOR the war. They have their opinion. They chose to fight against terrorism. And seeing as how you see it as your right to disagree, I suggest you let them make their own desicions about their lives. Second of all. I don't see you in a uniform carrying a gun on the sands of Iraq, so what the heck business is it of yours if we spend some more money on a fighting machine? You want the soldiers to come home from war, but you don't care if their equipment is insufficient to bring them? Well, I say grab a gun and shut up. Next, that submarine came here because it had respect for your state and its history and content. They came down here, and if I'm not mistaken, the NICEST one of them was the captain. Captain Davis is an exceptional man and a very intelligent one, and for you to insult him on a public document is not only rude, but ignorant. You should be ashamed of yourself. That man has gone through training beyond what you could even comprehend, and so has that crew. What do you do? You make satirical comic strips that don't even look good. I mean, you are definitely NO PICASSO. So, next time you want to put your big nose where it doesn't belong and show off your ignorance, I suggest you do it on a group of people less dedicated than the United States Navy. The service members of the US Armed Forces fight day in and day out for your right to even write or draw in this paper. You may have rights granted to you as a citizen of this country, but WE are the ones who defend it. You don't. Which means, on paper, you have every right to spread our names through the muck.....but guess what? You have no right as a person. If anything, you should be ashamed of yourself. I'm out.

Feeling touchy, are we?

I love the way you ask what business it is of his if "we" spend more money on a fighting machine.  As if he, a TAXPAYER, i.e., ONE OF THE PEOPLE WHOSE MONEY IS BEING SPENT, and a citizen in a DEMOCRACY should have no say in this.

Second, you go on and on about how Captain Davis has been personally insulted, but I would think that any educated person would be able to tell that Powell was not intending the person in the sub to represent the actual captain of the USS NC, but rather the people in the US Navy hierarchy who authorized the funds to build the USS NC.  If Captain Davis is as intelligent as you say he is then I'm sure he understands this; perhaps you should ask him to explain it to you.

Finally, "you have every right to spread our names through the much.....but guess what? You have no right as a person" is one of the most nonsensical things I've ever read.  He has every right but he has no right?  Stop channeling the ghost of Yogi Berra; he isn't dead yet.

Seriously, next time take a minute to try to figure out what Powell's actual point is -- and, for that matter, what your actual point is -- before your knee jerks onto the keyboard and types out a reply.  You're making the Navy look bad.

This is super funny. Good

This is super funny. Good work. Should have spent some of that money over here in the states.
