2003: The level of sacrifice that North Carolina troops have made over the course of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan has crystallized over the past month as five men with the 1132nd Military Police Company of the N.C. National Guard — a small unit based in Rocky Mount — have died in Iraq. The latest was Sgt. Lance O. Eakes, 25, of Apex.

What was making then-Gov. Jim Hunt a little queasy? A state Board of
Transportation member had pushed for roadwork that served a large project
that his company was developing. Tighter DOT rules followed, but as we found
out this month, board members continue to ignore conflicts of interest and the wider needs of the state beyond their own districts.
