Wake County Special Olympics

Wake County Special Olympics

On April 22-23, Ravenscroft welcomed the Special Olympic Games of Wake County to its campus, marking the 16th time the School has hosted the event since 1991. Despite gray skies, the campus was bright with banners, balloons and the bright t-shirts of volunteers and athletes.

More than 650 athletes, ranging in age from 6 to 21, competed in track and field events, as well as participated in play activities that prepare the youngest athletes for future competition.

The entire Ravenscroft community was involved in the event. Lower School students decorated lunch bags for the athletes, and attended the Opening Ceremonies to cheer them on. Middle School students helped pack athlete lunches, and Ravenscroft sophomores and juniors volunteered in different areas including as event assistants, buddies for the athletes, and as sports medicine trainers. Ravenscroft parents and faculty members also provided support as volunteers and helped supply athlete lunches. Ravenscroft coordinators for these games were Upper School faculty members Janet Smith and Dana Lindquist.

The School will also host a portion of the Special Olympics of North Carolina Summer Games on June 7-8. This is the third consecutive year that Ravenscroft has hosted the state-wide Games and its associated developmental field activities.
