Continuations of Comments Beyond Photo Captions

Java55

A catch-all place to continue lengthy or somewhat related discussions beyond the usual comments under captions for photos posted in the main gallery here -- just check the date posted and/or the topic name for easier reference to the photo in question and perhaps if possible post a thumbnail of the photo with the continuing questions, comments, and/or other discussions in reference to each photo. And its alright if this become a long linear thread over time. It could lead to some interesting reading as time goes on.

And with this being said and this new topic now created, we all now have a place to continue discussions where in the past it may have seemed somewhat awkward.

Thumbnail

Will you give instructions to post a thumbnail.  I've tried to add a relative photo under comments of a posted photo as I've seen you do Java.  The usual way of inserting a picture into text doesn't seem to work here.

Thumbnail instructions

Using my lated rose upload as an example:

Symmetry in a Rose

If you are using IExplorer just highlight the thumbnail directly out of the gallery photo listings and copy it to your clipboard and then paste it from your clipboard directly into the text field here where needed.

As for other browsers I suppose one would need to use the HTML tags to achieve this result but I'm not sure if any of the other associated HTLM functions will work, such as linking, etc from the thumbnail. Maybe the techies here could add a feature to make this easier for people with other kinds of browsers to do this also?

Posting a thumbnail

Ok, I'll give it a try and see if it works for me:

Yep, that was easy!  Can't remember what I was doing before, maybe I was using FireFox as my browser at that time- generally I only use IExplorer when I am on Share.

thumbnail posting

I see you've got a thumbnail posted and the caption displays whenever you run your curser over it, but the thumbnail doesn't link back to the original page from which it came when clicked. Makes me wonder if your IExplorer is different than mine, or whether its your browser that is different? Still though, it works good enough for the purposes intended here.

New Subject: Archived Gallery Photos

What to do with them when better shots follow? ...etc.

Me, I've deleted a few after getting better shots of the same, and replaced a couple with other photos and captions of things I missed or that had become lost during the last major upgrade last year - nothing important missing and none that I had used for linking to another post, but a couple of missing pieces that were once here then gone have been replaced again using the spots where un-needed photos were for place holders (making sure the URLs weren't linked anywhere to another post/photo comment before doing so) while waiting for the moderator(s) approval before they show up. Once up and posted I believe I will finally have a fairly complete gallery (or virtual tour) under the tag 'Ole Gilliam Mill Park' along with a number of photos made at Ole Gilliam Mill Park by jpo_05_09_07 as well as possible future others too.

Wow, the mods are quick tonight. They're up already.

A few more photos (as promised last year) on the way

While going through some old photos I noticed a series I had promised to post almost a year ago once this place slowed down a bit, but since it appears it isn't going to do so anytime soon (plus the fact I had almost forgotten I had posted this way back then) I figured I would post a series of 9 photos just to get them done and keep my promise, so stay tuned... One I need to go back and correct a typo but other than that, once the mods get them posted you'l find there are opportunities for kids to really get something out of these annual Ole Mill Crank-Ups at Ole Gilliam Mill Park each year! :-)

Photos are up - now to edit the typo

Editing finished - Now waiting for the mods to repost it with its correct caption and then the series will be complete! :-)

Copyrighted?

I couldn't find anything on this site saying that the materials posted are copyrighted. What does that mean (or did I miss something)? How do people feel about posting their stuff up to a place where anyone can download it?

Copyrighted?

From: http://www.triangle.com/about/terms/

A couple of small quotes out of a huge page:

"The statements, opinions and views expressed in user-contributed areas are the property of the individual/individuals contributing the infomation. The News & Observer makes no claims to the veracity or usefulness of material submitted and published by individual users."

"You will not reuse, republish or otherwise distribute the content or any modified or altered versions of it, whether over the Internet or otherwise, and whether or not for payment, without the express written permission of The News & Observer or the copyright holder."

As for myself anything I post online is fair game for anyone who might find a use for it to help promote their organizations, events, clubs, etc., or even to decorate their homes with photos I make. I know a lot of others (propbably most) may feel otherwise concerning their own photos but after so many years of posting photos online into public galleries and even hot-linking them to public websites although not from here because I don't want to bog down an already bogged down server, plus the preview images aren't the best quality. A good suggestion (as stated above) to those wanting to use other people's photos would be to ask the user who posted them first (login under an account and send a private message - it seems visitors can send messages but there is no way for the software here to allow a response back) just to make sure its OK. This would eliminate a lot of surprises for those who aren't accustomed to having their photos show up on other websites, etc. - plus in my personal case it would help to let me know how and where they are being used so that I would have some kind of idea how useful my photos are in general and after a while be able to figure out what types of topics are most popular as well.

copyright vs property

Thanks for pointing out the terms. I had not read them, nor was I aware they were there. I usually don't read directions, and of course it gets me into trouble. I'm pretty concerned about people using my stuff without crediting me, and seeing that policy makes me feel better.

I remember hearing about a large company paying compensation to a little girl whose image they had taken off her website and used for advertising. It sounds from that like calling material "property" may be pretty powerful, even if it isn't really copyrighted.
