There is a new "New York" or "Jewish" deli opening at the Falls River shopping area. We have been promised real deli several times and our hopes have been dashed. I hope this new place will come through. If they need a taste tester consultant, they can email me :0) and I can steer them in the right direction.
But, if you want real deli (Jewish and non-), you still have to go north. We stopped at Harold's Deli in Edison NJ on the way home from Massachusetts a few weeks ago. It is right off the Garden State and New Jersey Turnpikes (exit 10). The GPS took us right there! The last time we tried to get there we got lost LOL.
Harold's is attached to the Holiday Inn. There is always an ultra-Orthodox event going on in the hotel (they won't eat in the Deli cause it probably isn't Kosher or Kosher enough).
The menu is huge and the food is HUGE. Here is the sandwich my husband and I shared. Here is what knishes should look like:
The one in the back is potato and the one in front is kasha. Lots of filling and a thin crust (not heavy like the store bought ones). My hubbie didn't know if he would like kasha. Kasha is buckwheat groats. Kasha varnishkas are a common Sabbath dish. You can mix kasha with bowtie pasta. Anyways. I ate one quarter and took the rest home.
This is the smallest sandwich you can get. We get 4 sandwiches out of it. You can get extra bread from the pickle bar. It is half tongue and half pastrami. Hubbie doesn't go much for tongue. He is Irish.
We also had lunch twice at our favorite deli in Worcester, MA. Elsa's Bushel and Peck. Just can't get sandwiches around here like the ones at Elsa's:
This is a beef slaw. Roast beef, swiss, cole slaw (real slaw, not chopped like around here, sorry) on half of an Italian loaf. I get the land and sea dark - roast beef with crab meat (real crab). I get it on pita cause I can't eat all that bread anymore! Their best sandwich is the Superman. Half of Italian loaf, assorted meat (I think turkey, ham, and roast beef), cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion if you like, mustard, mayo and I think that is all. I used to be able to eat one, but resist it now.
We take pictures of food when we travel. It is weird maybe, but fun. I have a picture of the handle sandwich at The Lady and Sons, I have pictures of Ice Cream Sundaes, clams, lobsters, and more.
Food is always a big part of going home to Massachusetts. You can go home again especially to eat.
