For sound quality, CDs still have the edge. However for portability nothing beats an MP3. And if you get an mp3 with a good high bit rate (256k +) most people cannot hear the difference anyways. The problem is most mainstream online retailers of mp3s (like itunes) do not sell at such high bitrates, thus their mp3s don't sound as well as they should.
Some specialty retail sites do, however, sell at 256 or even 320 kps....and those mp3s, to me, sound as good as an mp3.
