Saint Mary's School junior Laura Medlin’s essay, “Abraham Ribicoff: Serving the National Interest,” has been selected as one of 10 national finalists in this year’s “John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest,” sponsored by the Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston. Ms. Medlin of Cary is an 11th-grade day student at Saint Mary’s School in Raleigh. Her essay was selected from among more than 1,000 entries.

Ms. Medlin was nominated for the competition by Saint Mary’s School English instructor Randall Lathan. The annual “John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest” invites high school students from across the nation to write an original essay about an elected official who has demonstrated political courage. The contest is a companion program of the “Profile in Courage Award,” named for President Kennedy’s 1957 Pulitzer Prize winning book, “Profiles in Courage,” which recounts the stories of eight senators, the obstacles they faced, and the special valor they demonstrated despite the risks. Saint Mary’s School 11th-graders read “Profiles in Courage” as their 2007 summer reading assignment.

Winning essayists will receive awards totaling up to $8,500. The first-place winner will be invited to accept the award at the Profile in Courage Award ceremony hosted in May by Caroline Kennedy and Senator Edward M. Kennedy at the JFK Presidential Library and Museum in Boston. A committee made up of Caroline Kennedy, president of the John F. Kennedy Foundation; Sen. Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts; Michael Beschloss, presidential historian; Sen. Olympia Snow of Maine; John Seigenthaler, former president of the American Society of Newspaper Editors, and others, will read and rank the 10 finalist essays. Winners will be announced in late March.
