As I have said before, if you do not like the way we do things down here, you are free to go back from where you came. I-95 does go both ways. Its really weird how people that move here start to disagree with the way we do things. Well if we do things so backwards, why do you stay. Please, and I mean please, move back to your original location if they did it sooo much better. Trust me, we will not miss you. In fact, the people that have moved to the South, especially North Carolina, are one reason for the drought we are in. They tax our resources: our educational system, our water, our QUALITY of life, and increase our noise pollution with their accents. As stated above, I-95 goes both ways (we should have a toll road to come into the state, but a free trip out)!
Wow! I thought the Civil War was over and the ridiculous ideas that encompassed that period in the North vs. South. No, the growth issues are not the "northerners" -- there are plenty of Floridians and Georgians that have moved here also -- along with Californians, Michiganers, etc. It is not the "area" of the company that has clogged the system -- it is the lack of growth studies. Do you remember how Cary, NC has been named the #1 place to retire for years? How do you think it got there -- Cary politicians touting their community maybe? Come on -- get with the program. The reason there are issues with water shortages, school overpopulation, etc. is that growth studies were not done appropriately. Also have you notice that there are also illegal immigrants "taking up your precious NC space?" Get over yourself and share the wonderful area we all live in. It doesn't always have to be "north vs. south" issues. Get real!
Yep -- I agree. I'm really sorry I relocated here -- not only is there this issue but how about jobs -- I've been unemployed three times since relocating here 5 years ago -- that's ridiculous. There just seems to be no method to the madness in this government. How can this be enforceable? Have these politicians heard of the internet -- you can buy garbage disposals on the internet -- order them on-line from Lowes, Home Depot, etc. So - - what's next? Banning us from garbage disposal searches -- coming into our homes and telling us how to do our laundry, take our showers? If they had gotten smart over 10 years ago and actually performed some growth and impact studies they wouldn't have water, sewer (and even overpopulated highways and schools). These politicians are living in the 50's and 60's -- the "good ole boys" need to be taken out of power and put some real 21st century leadership in place.
How is this even enforceable? I mean, if I want to put a new one in, I just buy it and take it to my house. Since it is just a city of Raleigh ordinance, I can easily buy one at even the stores in Raleigh. Or maybe I go to the next town and buy one. How would the city know what I have inside my house?
chatted with my stepson on the way to the 'Canes geme tonight.....
why doesn't the Council, instead, propose an ordinance that says that all apartment buildings must have grease-separators on their outbound sewage lines? that way, little grease gets into the sewers: problem solved near the root cause [lazy people] rather than on all of us.
then propose grease traps on all homes, under construction and existing, to prevent the same damage to the sewer systems? after all, just because my wife and i have been able to drain our bacon and other cooking grease and oils into empty plastic peanut-butter jars doesn't have to mean that other people have to learn how to do that [not to mention the ones who might not even be capable of doing something like that....].
this would also provide more work for local plumbers, when they'll be called out for emergency-emptying of the grease traps by those same people.
in the case of the apartment buildings' owners, they can pass the cost of emptying the traps on to ALL of the residents. much simpler than training people to do something as complex as tossing the grease into the garbage.
and who was it who wrote to the N&O on the 8th, saying they'll never give up their disposal, since they can't stand the smell of old eggshells in their garbage can?
the Council could mandate covered [you know, the foot-pedal-operated lids kind] of garbage cans as a Raleigh Standard, and then mandate that everyone put those complex plastic bags INTO the garbage cans and then mandate taking them out to the garbage bin when the can is full...
there are SO MANY fun solutions to this complex problem.
none of which involve replacing obsolete or crumbling sewer systems with new systems that can handle grease. i still wonder how Denver survives with their mandate.

I can't believe that out of all the people in Wake Co., we have only had 50 overflows and of those only 40% were related to grease being poured down the drain (not necessarily a garbage disposal), yet the City Council thinks it is beneficial to ban garbage disposals! Please! Big Brother at its best!
you said it!

ps... have you noticed? every time [think water, now sewer] a local utility has a problem, the consumers seem to be the ones who have to provide the solution? [think: conserve water, don't use disposals...]
weird, eh?
The city council seems to feel it has every possible freedom to meddle in how homes are built. This is just one more case.
There's a way to correct this - throw them out come election day. (Or just keep taking the N&O's advice and vote for folks like you have in there now.)
You get what you vote for folks.
Seriously?
It really is too bad that my job brought me to North Carolina. I mean, I get it, the weather is great, the cost of living is dirt cheap, and the local population is ununionized and willing to work for peanuts. But when I read stupid things like this...
Okay, I realize that things are sloooooowwwww here and that better alternatives are probably light years away for the local politicians, but this is ridiculous.
I've got an idea...let's outlaw indoor toilets and toilet paper too! Let's just go in our yards...I'm sure that there are a lot of North Carolinians that are already lacking indoor plumbing! Let's go green...or brown.
