How about Bridge of Sighs, by Pulitzer Prize winner Richard Russo? I've got it on my To Be Read shelf, but haven't tackled it yet -- this would be a great motivator.
We read this book for Read and Go with the Parks and Rec Dept. We all enjoyed this book. We then took a bus ride to the beach and visited the places mentioned in the book. It was awesome.
