Hear, hear!
Aren't comic strips supposed to be actually, you know, FUNNY?
"Mallard Fillmore" gets a good one off maybe once a month, at best.
Ah, well.
I don't understand why you would cut down trees to run the unfunny Mallard Fillmore. I'd rather see almost anything else. And it's not because it's conservative, it's because it's just bad.
I am pleased with the N&O's decision to keep all comics and expand to new ones. BUt I am curious about why so much effort in this. The N&O is not the only newspaper I've ever subscribed to that did a lot of handwringing over comics. I think as readers we need more disclosure, i.e. how much does it cost to run comics? What limits a newspaper from running 4, 5, 6 pages of comics? Are they really so expensive? What exactly does it cost the N&O?
I also read Daryl Cagle's website devoted to single panel political comics. His forum is one big lament about news media dropping political cartoons and/or staff cartoonists. What gives? Why is a page of political cartoons not feasible? Consider this an FOIA request in the other direction
While you are changing the comics, please consider returning the Wizard of Id. I am very glad you are returning Hagar. The comics haven't been the same without him. Please do not ever remove Marmaduke. For all pet lovers, we would hate to see him go. I really like the new comic "Pickles". I do not like Watch Your Head; Dilbert; Sally Forth; Frazz; Lio; Sylvia; and Pearls Before Swine.
The whole process feels like a waste of time now--the guest comics, the votes, these comments--because none of it mattered. The strips that were hated were added, and the duds are still there. I guess it was all a publicity stunt.
Family Circus is the worst possible comic in America. Each day when I open my paper I get a little bit dumber while reading about the exploits of little Jeffy and Sally and whatever the other useless children are called. Each joke centers around simple every day actions that Bil Keane takes and destroys for absolutely no reason.
If I could burn every single Family Circus comic, I would.
I too am totally puzzled and frustrated over your caving on some of these horrible strips-Sylvia, Mallard Filmore, and Watch Your Head to name a few. The voting was overhwhelmingly against them!
Why not give a shot to some new comics that are up and coming such as Stone Soup or 9 Chickweed Ln.?
I mean the voters spoke solidly against several that you are leaving in the paper. Is ANYONE really happy over this?
I’m so glad you asked! (Page 1-E, Wed, May 28). I’ve been extremely unhappy with the “funnies” for many years now. I realize a lot of those authors have passed on and no one is writing the strips for them, but this new crop of strips is, in my humble opinion, AWFUL!
I am 54 years old, born in 1954, which makes me a “baby boomer”. I grew up reading the Comix, including “Nancy”, “Blondie”, “Marmaduke”, “Peanuts”, even “Mary Worth”, “Little Orphan Annie” and “Doctor Kildare”. In those days I learned from them, like how to behave, how to talk to people of different genders and age groups, people of different professions, races, etc. These days I really like the serials, especially “For Better or for Worse”.
The commix I especially hate today are:
*Cathy (I was sooo glad when it discontinued several years ago. Why did it come back?
Did she need the money or something? It is just insulting to women. That isn’t how most of us are!)
*Rose is Rose (hard to read)
*Rhymes with Orange
*Pearls Before Swine (only because the Alligators are too tedious to read)
*Funky Winkerbean, now that they’ve killed off Lisa – She and Les were the only reason I read the strip in the first place, everyone else bored me. Why did they kill Lisa off?)
*Watch Your Head
*Mallard Fillmore (I never liked political cartoons)
*Candorville
*Sylvia (impossible for these 54 y/o eyes to read, I don’t want to have to get out my
reading glasses just to read this one particular comic strip)
*Deflocked (too much like “Get Fuzzy”
*Get Fuzzy
*Spider Man (never liked the comic books in the 50s, either – too slow with too many
facial grimaces for my taste, like Animae – gross!)
*F Minus
*Non Sequitor
*Bizarro
*Marmaduke (it is WAAAY too childish now – why???)
*Rhymes with Orange
The ones that BORE me are:
*Rose is Rose
*Tundra
*Lio (it’s funny once in awhile)
*Sherman’s Lagoon
The ones I love are:
*Wizard of Id
*For Better or For Worse
*Luann
*Zits
*Beetle Baily
*BC
*Hagar the Horrible
*Sally Forth
*CURTIS!!!! (My FAVE!)
*Shoe
*Peanuts
*Garfield
*Frazz
*Mother Goose and Grimm
*Pickles
*Dilbert
The rest are OK, but not the greatest, but far better than the ones I HATE. I’ll be very curious to read other readers’ input on my humble opinion of these strips. Thank you!
Don't get it
Why waste space on something like "the mostly hated" Mallard Fillmore? Especially the mostly hated Mallard Fillmore?
