TO KEYNOTE LIGHTNER YOUTH LEADERSHIP BANQUET
RALEIGH -- Area civic, business and educational leaders on November 15, 2007 will celebrate the 34th anniversary of the election of Clarence E. Lightner. In the 217 years that Raleigh has been in existence Clarence Lightner is the only African American in history to have served as the Capital City's Mayor. The Lightner banquet is expected to attract 500 Triangle citizens to the North Raleigh Hilton Hotel. The banquet will serve as a benefit fundraiser to continue programs of the youth leadership academy that was established in honor of the late mayor. The youth training initiative started in June 2003. The mission statement of the program is to encourage and promote the responsibility for civic duty awareness and participation by youth residing in Wake County through the teaching and implementation of leadership development strategies, philanthropic and community service projects.

Men and women over sixteen years of age are encouraged to register for the MVP Sports Centers new Wiffle Ball league. Co-ed teams of six will take the field, while team rosters should not exceed 15 members. Games will consist of 7 innings of play or 50 minutes, whichever comes first, and will be played on Thursday evenings on the Sports Centers' state-of-the-art air conditioned indoor soccer field. Teams may register for $200. Individuals may register for $30 and will be placed on a team. The MVP Sports Center will provide one umpire per game, event staff, equipment and awards at seasons' end.

Kids Night Out: That means Parent's Night Out!!! Parent's are invited to drop off the kids (5 to 13 years of age) so they can enjoy a peaceful evening. Kids are invited to visit the MVP Sports Center from 6pm-10pm for an evening of fun and games! This program runs every Friday throughout the year. The youth will be split into age groups, depending on registration numbers each week, and will be supervised by The Sports Centers' professional staff. They will enjoy a variety of activities including; Soccer, Basketball, Baseball/Softball, Volleyball, Ice Skating, Story Telling, Board Games, Relay Races, Creative Games and much more.

AnimalKind Potluck Picnic--Sunday, November 4th, 1 to 4 PM (Lake Crabtree Park)
Come out to play at the AnimalKind Potluck Picnic! The AnimalKind Potluck Picnic is open to all friends of AnimalKind, THE $20 FIX, and ReTails Thrift Shop--and their friends! At the beautiful Lake Crabtree Park (in the “open play” area by the lake), located at 1400 Aviation Parkway, Morrisville, NC 27560--just off I-40 at Exit 285. Please bring a vegetarian dish or dessert to share. (We'll have soft beverages, paper goods, etc.) Bring frisbees, badminton rackets, volleyballs, other outdoor games, your camera, folding chairs and/or blankets. (Limited park seating.) Children and pets are welcome. (Leash laws apply to the latter!) Note: ReTails Thrift Shop will be closed on picnic day. We hope our regular shoppers and donors will join us at the picnic! The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America adopted a strategy for engagement in the Holy Land called "Peace Not Walls" at the 2005 Churchwide Assembly. During the vigil service, we will view the Peace Not Walls resource video, "Forbidden Family".
