NEW PRESIDENT OF AT&T NORTH CAROLINA

TO KEYNOTE LIGHTNER YOUTH LEADERSHIP BANQUET


RALEIGH -- Area civic, business and educational leaders on November 15, 2007 will celebrate the 34th anniversary of the election of Clarence E. Lightner. In the 217 years that Raleigh has been in existence Clarence Lightner is the only African American in history to have served as the Capital City's Mayor. The Lightner banquet is expected to attract 500 Triangle citizens to the North Raleigh Hilton Hotel. The banquet will serve as a benefit fundraiser to continue programs of the youth leadership academy that was established in honor of the late mayor. The youth training initiative started in June 2003. The mission statement of the program is “to encourage and promote the responsibility for civic duty awareness and participation by youth residing in Wake County through the teaching and implementation of leadership development strategies, philanthropic and community service projects”.

"Frederick Douglass from Slavery to Freedom: the Journey to New York City" is a panel exhibition that explores slavery and abolition through the life of one of the most famous men in nineteenth-century America. The exhibition explores his life under slavery, in Douglass’ own words, and his escape to freedom. It will be on display at the Cameron Village Regional Library at 1930 Clark Avenue in Raleigh. Admission is free.

In conjunction with the Frederick Douglass exhibit, the library will also display a collection of quilts made with African-inspired fabrics. The quilts were handmade by Wendell Library employee Sharon Barrow.

This will be a safe place to express feelings, share memories, meet new friends and learn how to process grief. The eight week season will run through July and August on the MVP's state-of-the-art air conditioned indoor soccer field Saturday afternoons beginning at noon. Individuals may register for $100 and will be placed on a co-ed team. Or, an entire 'team' may register for $1000.00 (suggested roster size is 12-15 boys and girls). MVP will provide all event staff, equipment, league jerseys and end-of-season awards to each participant.

Games will consist of 7 innings of play or 50 minutes, whichever comes first, and will be played on Thursday evenings on the Sports Centers' state-of-the-art air conditioned indoor soccer field. Teams may register for $200. Individuals may register for $30 and will be placed on a team. The MVP Sports Center will provide one umpire per game, event staff, equipment and awards at seasons' end.

The youth will be split into age groups, depending on registration numbers each week, and will be supervised by The Sports Centers' professional staff. They will enjoy a variety of activities including; Soccer, Basketball, Baseball/Softball, Volleyball, Ice Skating, Story Telling, Board Games, Relay Races, Creative Games and much more.

Comedy by Neal Simon - This is the story of two elderly vaudevillians, Willy Clark and Al Lewis, formerly partners known as “Lewis and Clark”, who, having worked as a double act for some 40-odd years, grew to hate each other, and for their last year together never spoke to each other off-stage. In the eleven years since Lewis retired, they have neither spoken to nor seen each other. Clark, who was not ready for retirement, resented Lewis for breaking up the act. Now CBS is inviting the team to reunite for a special on the “History of Comedy”. They will represent the vaudeville era at its best.

Dog Safety and Bite Prevention Awareness Program on Saturday, August 4th from 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. at Eva Perry Library in Apex. Approximately 4 million people are bitten by dogs each year. Children are more likely to be bitten than adults. Elaine Pendell of Carolina Dog Traning in Apex is holding a free Dog Safety and Bite Prevention Awareness Program for rising 2nd-5th graders and their parents on Saturday, Aug. 4 at 2:30 p.m. at the Eva Perry Library in Apex. TO KEYNOTE LIGHTNER YOUTH LEADERSHIP BANQUET


RALEIGH -- Area civic, business and educational leaders on November 15, 2007 will celebrate the 34th anniversary of the election of Clarence E. Lightner. In the 217 years that Raleigh has been in existence Clarence Lightner is the only African American in history to have served as the Capital City's Mayor. The Lightner banquet is expected to attract 500 Triangle citizens to the North Raleigh Hilton Hotel. The banquet will serve as a benefit fundraiser to continue programs of the youth leadership academy that was established in honor of the late mayor. The youth training initiative started in June 2003. The mission statement of the program is “to encourage and promote the responsibility for civic duty awareness and participation by youth residing in Wake County through the teaching and implementation of leadership development strategies, philanthropic and community service projects”.

"Frederick Douglass from Slavery to Freedom: the Journey to New York City" is a panel exhibition that explores slavery and abolition through the life of one of the most famous men in nineteenth-century America.
