Wake County will likely join the handful of North Carolina counties where detention officers check for illegal immigrants when they are jailed and then begin proceedings that could eventually lead to deportation. In Mecklenburg County, almost thirty percent of the infractions that led to removal proceedings were for traffic violations. In Alamance, the percentage was even higher — at 45 percent. Should this be a concern, or is this a good program?

Why can't it be both?
This is a concern if the feds are not funding this as local taxes should not be used to solve national problems. It's a good program if done by detention officers because these folks have shown they don't play by our rules. I have heard that lots of illegal immigrants do not possess any kind of driver's license or insurance. This puts a burden on everyone else and is a also a safety issue. Don't we get international drivers licenses when we drive in other countries? Only seems right that you show some form of skill before being allowed on the highway.
