Wake County Animal Center Hot House

I witnessed shelter dogs in great distress throughout the summer of 2007. We are the voice of the voiceless. The public needs to keep an eye on Wake Animal Center...to be sure they keep making positive changes for the animals. Apathy means pain for the shelter dogs.

hot summer at the shelters

I can only hope we have a very mild summer. Last year, that month straight of 100+ degrees was horrible, even if you had a cushy home and air conditioning. The shelters were miserable, I am sure.

baby owl in tree in apex

One parent was overhead, back/forth across the clearing yesterday. We can only observe 1 of the 2 small ones today - so the one in the pic is probably up in the high pines like the sibling, but we just can't find him -- yet! Yup, it's a pretty little bugger - as is the sibling who was on the ground yesterday, too!

baby owl in tree in apex

Just like the baby owl on the ground - photo taken earlier in the day and posted this evening - we believe this one is also a Great Horned Owl, based on the bird books and Internet pages we consulted. The size, eyes, facial features and "bib" all seem to indicate this particular owl type. Also, appears to be somewhere in the 4-7 week age bracket.

What a wonderful photo and how awesome to be able to see an owl at such close proximity. What species of owl is this? And is it usual to see owls in the daytime?

Good Morning. I would like to know if Wake Tech will be hosting the Digital Game Summer Camp this year. I also would like to know about the costs associated with the camp.

Thank you! I'd like to say this was a carefully coordinated shot, but as I explained earlier, it caught both her mother and I completely off guard.

Awesome photo! They've captured the true spirit of a child in this photo -- the look of anticipation and mischief right before the beautiful flower disappears!

From an adoptive mother

I am the mother of an adopted daughter, and I have told her from day one that if she wants to try and find her birth family, I am with her all the way. Her Father and I brought her home when she was 5 weeks old, and he died when she was 5. I am a genealogy nut, and I know if I were adopted, I would be searching for my family. I am glad the law passed. Adoptees have a right to their birth information. I think it is an inborn curiosity to know who you really are.
