Contest 1 Winner

OK, perhaps I left too many hints around on that one. Robert used his extensive knowledge of colors to distinguish red and brown and with a couple of Googles and maybe 20 mouse clicks arrived at the correct answer. I have people around the world now gathering photos for me, so the next contest should appear soon. Thanks to all for playing and to Robert, just let me know when and where you want to collect (preferably a place with no dancing ;-) ).

The dealer is actually in Cayuta and was an old white wooden building years ago as I remember. The next hint would have been about Wegmans and speidie sauce and "white hots".

Pulling back towards NC about halfway...

After looking more closely at the fuzzy outlines in the larger map on the wall left of the entrance and comparing the outlines to various maps on different scales it *appears* to be a map showing an area from West Virginia extending all the way up into Ohio with a small portion of Lake Erie at the very top. So now I'm revising my guess to focus upon a location more towards West Virginia. As for exactly where in this area? Maybe somewhere close to the West Virginia Turnpike?

Out on a limb...

I'm making another guess based on the following: the dealership is closed on Sunday, the topography in the background, the use of the words "tee" and "formal" in Hint #2, I don't think you went out of state during September, and I've never been to this dealership. The final reason is I have checked out every dealer in NC and this particular dealer does not have a photo on the website that I could find.

My guess is Sandhill Harley-Davidson in Pinehurst, NC. That is my final answer.

Going waaaay outside the box...

Judging from the weather conditions for that day... and the lower angle of the satellite dish which also faces very close to true south, this places your location way outside the possibilty of even being close to the Appalachians! And all the lakes in the maps... I will take a wild stab at it, afterall you did say the 'state' as being one of the answers... Wisconsin? I know its "out there", but its the only place with lots of lakes and trees east of the Rockies that fits close plus there's a new Harley-Davidson Museum is out that way too!

Ah so, said the wise man!

I see the picture is just a tad out of level now and correcting for this places the angle of the satellite dish to be a little lower towards the horizon than at our latitude here in NC, and if the direction it faces is closer to true south than here in NC, this places the location somewhere to the northwest perhaps by one time zone! And as for the maps in the window to the left of the entrance I do not recognize the county lines in the large map nor the shapes of the lakes in the smaller map (and I searched for similar shaped lakes in Western NC, SC, VA, and eastern Tenn). I think I need to go northwards a bit and yet still follow near the Appalachains while looking for lakes and county lines with similar shapes...

Hint #2

Wow, I did not realize the dish was a hint!!! I think you over estimated the angle just a tad though. If you follow an older fashioned compass, you will be real close. It was a Sunday and I expected them to be closed but I was hoping maybe someone would be there to sell me a black tee for "formal" parties.

Definitely not the Ghost Town dealer as the cardinal points in the picture above are all in the wrong directions if the topographic overlay on the GIS map were to even halfway match. The satellite dish (which points to a south-southwest direction) gave the correct orientation of the building away. The angle from vertical at which the satellite dish points towards the geosynchronous satellite in orbit overhead the equator at about 22,300 miles is however close being right for our latitude, in fact very close so I would guess this dealer is located somewhere along the same latitude as North Carolina, and judging from the background (and reflections) in the photo above it is most likely located well within the Appalachians too. As for where??? It seems I may need to borrow a piece of equipment from ET to be more efficient at solving this most perplexing mystery!

Dealer Photo Contest

Well, after double-checking the suspect site using a GIS map with all its various overlays I found the site was not the one I was looking for, or I don't think it is (Gene Lummus Ghost Town Harley-Davidson) but the digital thumbtack I found on the other mapping site which uses Google Earth images was misplaced by about a quarter mile... plus when I went back to look again a couple days later the digital thumbtack had since been moved to within a hundred feet of the suspect dealer and therefore was in general agreement with the GIS map this time too. Go figure.

So in a nutshell I think I'm still at zip! (but the topographic overlay on the GIS map looks very similar to what I see in the picture above).

...Things that make you go Hmmm...

Dealer Photo Contest

I have about exhausted my resources looking for this on-line but I did discover one suspect place while searching on Google Earth's outdated images which showed woods where there was supposed to be a dealership! ...either that or a digital thumbtack was not in its proper location. Hmmm...(?)

Hint #1 and some details too...

First off, thanks for the invite and eligibility - good choice of meeting areas and all within walking distance from eachother too! Decisions, decisions...

Anyway back to the details, I noticed your reflection in one of the main entrance windows - you were definitely holding a camera and not a cell phone camera! Also just to the right in the reflections of another window I saw this nice landscape of either foothills or mountains with just a trace hint that autumn would soon be on its way and also judging from the relative abundance of tree species in these reflections I am leaning more towards the eastern side of the Appalachians and in North Carolina too. Hope I'm still in the ballpark :)

Hint #1

You have had a week to work on this so I will tell you the country. It is in the US! I am making Java eligible for the prize, we can meet at Cup of Joe or the Nickle, or somewhere in that neck of the woods, your choice. Java has seen one hint and Wanda and Dave have seen a different hint and this information should therefore be a hint too!

An old Zen Master once told me, let your fingers do the walking! The brute force method will work but is very inefficient. A confirming picture can be found in an collection "out there" but is from a very different angle. Oh yea, and my cell phone does not put a visible date on the photo!!!
